The Murray State Racers remained unbeaten with an 82-65 win over SIU Edwardsville Saturday at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. Following a loss earlier in the day by Syracuse, the Racers are now the lone undefeated team in NCAA D-I basketball as they improved to 20-0 and 8-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Isaiah Canaan led the way with 21points while Jewaun Long scored 17 and Donte Poole added 14, as the Racers set the school record for the earliest date reaching their 20th victory.
The Racers entered the game ranked 10th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and 12th in the Associated Press poll.
The Racers went on a 14-0 run starting when the game was tied at 10-10 at the 15:52 mark. The Racers got three stops on defense that was followed by a three from Canaan and two from Poole. The 26-12 lead was the largest of the half for MSU.
The half ended with Canaan hitting another three for a 49-35 MSU lead at the break.
MSU got a rare five-point play to open a 59-41 lead with 17:04 remaining. Latreze Mushatt was fouled on a layup and missed the free throw for a possible three-point play. The Racers grabbed the rebound and Jewuan Long hit a corner three-point basket.
SIUE cut MSU's lead to 14 (65-51) but never got any closer.
Mushatt led MSU with eight rebounds to go with seven points, while Ed Daniel was MSU's fourth player in double-figure scoring with 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
Game notes
About 50 minutes before MSU and SIUE tipped off, a buzz went through the arena when the news of Syracuse's first loss was confirmed. It was at that moment, the Racers became the final undefeated team in NCAA D-I men's basketball.
The Racers' 20-0 start is already a school record for best start to a season and overall. They're now one from tying the OVC record of 21-0 by Western Kentucky in the 1953-54.
MSU's 20th win records their 25th all-time 20-win season in 87 seasons and their third in a row. The school record is four straight seasons from 1996 through 2000 under Mark Gottfried and Tevester Anderson. Steve Prohm becomes the fourth MSU rookie coach out of 15 to win 20 in his first season following John Miller (1942-43), Tevester Anderson (1998-99) and Mick Cronin (2003-04).
The Racers come home this week to spring semester classes and some time for practice before their next challenge. MSU hosts Eastern Illinois Saturday at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center and look to increase their 16-game home winning streak.
