The Murray State men's tennis team dropped their opening match of the 2011-12 season to Chattanooga, 7-0, at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky.
“It's the first match of the year for us and the third for Chattanooga so they looked sharper,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “I'm pleased with the play of our players, especially my freshman and newcomers. As a coach evaluating the first match of the year I know that we will be able to continue to improve through the course of the season.”
Sophomore Arthur Valle and junior Tyler Jeffers were the lone Racers (0-1) to earn set wins during the match. Valle won the first set (6-4) at No. 2 singles before falling to Christ Smith 6-3, 6-3 in the final two sets. Jeffers lost his first set at No. 6 singles (6-1) before rebounding to win the second set 6-3. Jeffers eventually fell in a tie-breaking third set, 10-5, to Pavels Grigorjevs.
MSU will return to the court, Friday, Feb. 3 when they host Abilene Christian at 9 a.m. at Kenlake Tennis Center. The Racers will then travel Memphis, Tenn. to face East Carolina (Feb. 4) and Memphis (Feb. 5).
