15-0 Racers Stay Perfect - Outlast Eastern Kentucky In 76-67 Win

The Murray State Racers kept their unbeaten streak going at 15 straight wins with a 76-67 win over Eastern Kentucky at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers (ranked 18th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and 19th in the Associated Press poll) stayed in the group of only four teams that have yet to suffer a loss in NCAA D-I men's basketball. The Racers also pushed their home court winning streak to 14 straight and grabbed the solo lead in the Ohio Valley Conference at 3-0.
Donte Poole tied his season and career high with 22 points to lead MSU, hitting 6-of-12 field goals while sinking 7-of-8 free throw attempts. Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel both added 16 points, and Stacy Wilson came off the bench to contribute 13. Latreze Mushatt grabbed 10 rebounds in making his first start of the season in place of injured Ivan Aska.
With Murray State leading by 11 at halftime, EKU (9-7, 3-1 OVC) whittled down the Racers advantage throughout the second half, cutting the score to a 54-5 with 6:25 remaining. The Colonels would pull to within a point with five minutes remaining, but the Racers put the game out of reach in the final minutes as Poole hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 left to lead 67-62 and Wilson hit a fast-break layup off an inbound play to give MSU a seven point lead with just under a minute left.
In the first half, MSU trailed by five at the 13:55 mark as EKU connected on its first six shot attempts, but the Racers got going from the three-point line. Poole picked a pass and made an easy two. Moments later he hit two corner threes for a 20-15 MSU lead at the 8:40 mark. Brandon Garrett came off the bench and scored two baskets and MSU pushed its lead to 30-20 at the when Canaan hit a three at the 4:44 mark of the first half. MSU led 44-33 at the break.
Poole and Canaan each scored 13 points in the first half as both teams shot above 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes, the Racers holding a 64%-56.5% shooting advantage.
The Racers return to action this weekend, hitting the road for a 7 p.m. tip-off against Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn. Saturday night's game is one of three MSU games currently scheduled to be televised on ESPNU.
Game Notes
Isaiah Canaan became the 38th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club when he hit a three-point shot at the 12:40 mark of the first half. Canaan joins teammate Ivan Aska who made the coveted mark in November. MSU has had a player reach 1,000 points in four straight seasons. Tyler Holloway (2008), Danero Thomas (2009), Isacc Miles (2010) and now Aska and Canaan.
The Racers' 15-0 start is only one win from the school record of 16-0 by the 1935-36 team and two wins from the overall win streak of 17 by the 2009-10 team.
Poole's 22 points tied his career-high that he had against San Francisco (Nov. 25) in the Semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.
