The Murray State Racers came home with second place at the Charleston Classic Sunday evening when they suffered an 81-74 defeat to Colorado at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
The Racers, who trailed 33-31 at half, were down 39-33 in the second half at the 18:42 mark and went on a 12-3 run to grab a 45-42 lead at 15:24. Three-point baskets by Stacy Wilson and Dexter Fields led the charge. The game was tied 52-52 at the 8:04 mark when Fields hit another three from the corner, but CU answered with a 13-1 run to lead 63-53 with 5:05 remaining.
The Racers (3-1) never recovered and could never get closer than four points the rest of the way and took their first loss of the season.
At times in the first half, the Racers looked like they were ready to take off. They got a pair of threes from Isaiah Canaan to build a 23-17 lead at the 6:47 mark. Canaan hit another at the 4:20 mark to keep the Racers in front 26-22. The half ended with the Buffaloes getting a banked in three-pointer and a last second fast break to take a 33-31 lead. MSU was plagued by foul trouble in the first half when Ed Daniel, Brandon Garrett each picked up their second personal foul, while Erik McCree went into the half with three fouls.
Canaan led MSU with 21 points, while Daniel recorded his second straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Fields scored a season-high 18 points to give the Racers three scorers in double-figures.
Each team had 17 turnovers in the game.
Colorado shot 53 percent from the field for the day (25-of-47), while the Racers were 45 percent (28-of-62). The Buffs had a decided advantage at the free throw line shooting 75 perent (27-of-37), while MSU shot 53 percent (8-of-13).
Game Notes
Canaan was named the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team in voting my media members covering the event. The rest of the team included: Cory Jefferson (Baylor), D'Angelo Harrison (St. John's), Pierre Jackson (Baylor) & Askia Booker (Colorado) who was named the MVP.
The Racers were meeting the Buffaloes for only the second time. Colorado now leads 2-0 as they also won the first meeting in Boulder in 2000.
The Racers were shooting for another early-season tournament championship after winning the Great Alaska Shootout in 2011.
After the Thanksgiving holiday, the Racers return home Saturday to host the Old Dominion Monarchs. The game will tip at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
Actor Bill Murray was in attendance at the game at TD Arena.
