The Murray State women's basketball team returns to the CFSB Center on Tuesday night to open a six-game home stretch that begins with Evansville at 7 p.m.
The Racers picked up their first win of the season Saturday, by defeating Longwood on the road 76-68.
The first half of the game belonged to the Racers, with MSU opening the frame on an 8-0 run thanks to two 3-pointers from senior Mariah Robinson. However, the Lancers battled back and took their first lead in the game at 30-29 with 5:45 left in the stanza.
That lead did not last for long as the Racers ended the half on a 14-2 run to take a 43-29 lead into the locker room at the break. Robinson finished the frame with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Her 17 points is the best single-half scoring performance of the season so far for Murray State.
In the second half, the Lancers opened up on a 14-2 run of their own, until back-to-back Jessica Winfrey baskets beginning with 16:52 left stopped their momentum. Winfrey's first basket gave the Racers back a lead which they never relinquished.
Robinson and Winfrey both ended the day with double-doubles, marking the first for each since the 2010-11 season. Robinson notched the third of her career with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Winfrey picked up her 11th by scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 boards.
The Racers continued their strong free throw shooting in the contest by going 17-for-25 or 68.0 percent. Robinson was perfect form the stripe for the second-straight game, going 8-for-8 to raise her season percentage to 92.3 percent (24-26).
The Purple Aces will enter Tuesday at 2-1 and are coming off a huge 74-65 win over San Jose State in which they knocked down a school-record 15 3-pointers.
Khristian Hart had five of the 15 threes in the game and finished with 18. Hart currently leads the Purple Aces with 16.3 points per game, while Samantha Heck is averaging a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game. UE is looking to bounce back from a rough 2011-12 campaign in which it went 5-25.
Tuesday will mark the 30th meeting all –time between the two teams, with the Racers holding a 17-12 advantage. In Murray, the gap is even larger with Murray State leading that series, 10-4. The two teams met twice last season with each team winning the game on its home court. On Nov. 11, the Racers won 76-61 at the CFSB Center, while the Purple Aces took the Dec. 10 contest in Evansville, 78-48.
Fans not able to make it to The Bank will have three ways to follow the action live on Tuesday night. For fans in the greater Murray area, they can catch the action on the radio with Kyle Rogers on 1340 AM WNBS.
