The Murray State women's basketball team will close out a six-game homestand on Sunday, when they host Alabama A&M at the CFSB Center for noon tip-off. The contest will precede a men's game with Western Kentucky that will immediately follow the women's game.
Last Thursday, the Racers posted on of their best offensive performances in school history with a 110-28 win over Mid-Continent at the CFSB Center
MSU shot a season-high 54.2 percent on the night, marking the first time since last year's OVC tournament win over Austin Peay that it shot over 50 percent in a game. The game also marked just the 21st time in program history that the Racers have scored over 100 points in a single contest.
With 110, points, the game ties for the 3rd best offensive performance in program history and marked the first time since 1984 that the Racers have scored 110 points. The 82-point margin victory is the largest ever against a collegiate opponent and second largest in school history. The largest margin, 85, came in a 103-18 win over the Fort Campbell army post on Dec. 3 1975 in Murray.
All five MSU starters scored in double-digits in the contest, led by freshmen Erika Sisk and Kelsey Dirks, who had 20 points each. Junior Erica Burgess followed closely behind with 17 points, while senior Kyra Watson had 12. Senior Mariah Robinson rounded out the starters with 11 points, while sophomore Keiona Kirby also got in on the double-digit party to lead the MSU bench with 10 points.
Dirks led all rebounders in the game with 11, for her second consecutive double-double, while Burgess chipped in with seven boards of her own. The game was a well-rounded one for Burgess, as she was over halfway to a quad-double in the contest, also notching seven assists and six steals in just 25 minutes of action.
On Tuesday, freshman Kelsey Dirks was named as the adidas® OVC Freshman of the Week for games played December 3-9. Dirks' honor marks the third-straight week that a Racer freshman has won the award, with teammate Erika Sisk having won the two previous.
Along with Sisk, Dirks led all-scorers with a career-high 20 points in Murray State's 110-28 win over Mid-Continent last week. The freshman from Robinson, Ill., also had a game-high 11 rebounds to notch her second straight double-double. Shooting-wise, Dirks turned in one of her best performances of the season, by going 9-for-11 or 81.8 percent. From the charity stripe, she was equally as effective, finishing the night a perfect 2-for-2.
Dirks is now the fifth MSU freshman to claim the award, according to OVC records that date back to the 2006-07 season, joining former Racer Jenny Petrie and teammates Mariah Robinson, Jessica Winfrey, and Sisk.
Sunday's meeting with Alabama A&M will mark the fifth meeting all-time, between the two teams. Murray State currently leads the series 4-1, after Alabama A&M got its first win in the series, 76-71, last season in Normal. The Racers have won both meetings in Murray and lead the all-time series at Alabama A&M, 2-1.
The largest win in the series for MSU was 21 points on Dec. 17, 2008 at the CFSB Center with a 90-69 Racer victory. The closest win for Murray State came in the first meeting when they topped the Bulldogs, 61-59, on Jan. 15, 2007 in Normal.
The Lady Bulldogs are currently 1-3 on the season and in the midst of a three-game losing streak. Alabama A&M opened the season with a 62-51 over Division II Miles, but have since dropped games to UAB, Auburn and Kansas. Sisters Alyssa and Brittney Strickland currently lead the Bulldogs with 8.5 and 7.3 points per game, while NaDra Robertson is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game to lead the Lady Bulldogs on the boards.
Sunday's game will be broadcast on 1340 AM WNBS, as well as a free live video stream on the OVC Digital Network. Live stats for the Sunday matinee will also be available on GoRacers.com.
