The Murray State Racers take on the Dayton Flyers Saturday in an 11 a.m. CT tip at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. The CBS Sports Network will televise the game and Racer Radio can be heard over the air on WFGE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com.
The Racers (9-1) won on the road for the 16th straight time Wednesday in a 61-54 victory at Arkansas State. MSU had a season low 21 field goals and .412 shooting percentage, but relied on their trademark defense to grind out their sixth straight win since their only loss (Nov. 18) against Colorado in the title game of the Charleston Classic.
MSU's school-record road winning streak is remarkable indeed as MSU was the only defeated road team last season in NCAA D-I going 13-0. This season, the Racers have added three more road wins at Lipscomb (Nov. 26), Evansville (Dec. 8) and at ASU. MSU's last road loss was the final game of the 2010-11 season at Missouri State in the National Invitation Tournament on March 15, 2011.
Head coach Steve Prohm became the fastest to 40 wins in MSU history in the win at ASU. Prohm has 40 wins in 43 games surpassing the previous best by Mick Cronin (2003-05) who had 40 wins in 53 games. Cronin, now the head coach at Cincinnati, also set the mark for the fastest to 50 wins doing it in 69 games. Mark Gottfried (1998-01) and Tevester Anderson (1998-02) are second fastest to get 50 wins in 71 games. Gottfried is the head coach at North Carolina State and Anderson is head coach at Jackson State.
The Racers are playing at the UD Arena for the first time since dropping a tight game in the NCAA Tournament in 2006 to the Tyler Hansbrough-led North Carolina Tar Heels. MSU's last game against the Flyers at their home court was in 1997 when the Racers came away with a 76-69 win. Dayton played at MSU last season with the Racers winning 75-58. The Flyers lead the series 5-3 with four games having been played in the 1950's and two in the 1960's.
MSU's All-America Isaiah Canaan enters the UD game ranked eighth in the nation with a 21.0 scoring average. Canaan is 10th on MSU's all-time scoring list with 1,584 points and is taking aim at ninth place Garrett Beshear who had 1,716 points from 1950-53. Canaan has 243 career three-point baskets as he closes in on MSU leader Frank Allen who had 251 from 1989-93.
After a break for Christmas, the Racers return home (Dec. 29) to face Valparaiso.
