Racer Track & Field Opens Season at Southern Illinois

The Murray State Track and Field squad will open the 2012-13 indoor season on Saturday as the Racers will travel to Carbondale, Ill., for the Southern Illinois Saluki Fast Start. The meet will be MSU's lone meet of the fall semester and fifth consecutive season they will begin the year at Southern Illinois.
All-American Alexis Love will be running in two events for the Racers on Saturday. Love will run in the 60m and 400m dashes. Love is the school record holder in the 60 with a time of 7.42. Sharda Bettis will also compete in the 60 for MSU. Bettis, who is the school record holder in the 60-meter hurdles, will compete in that event as well as the long jump.
2012 Freshman of the Year Tonia Pratt will participate in the shot put and the weight throw for the Racers. Pratt is the defending OVC Champion in the weight throw and also took fifth-place in the shot put at last year's championships.
Ashley Conway will compete in the high jump at Southern Illinois. Conway placed second in the OVC last season in the event.
Murray State is led by Jenny Severns who is entering her third season with MSU. Severns is assisted by Adam Kiesler, also in his third year, TJ Wirth (first) and Taylor Miller (first). In all, the Racers will be sending 27 athletes and competing in 12 events at the Saluki Fast Start.
The Racers will be competing against eight other teams at the meet, including OVC opponents SIU Edwardsville, Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech.
After Saturday, the Racers will be on more than a month break for the holidays and will return to action in January.
