The Murray State Racers travel to the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip on the Racer TV Network and ESPN3. The Racers are coming off a convincing 82-63 win over Austin Peay Saturday, while the Redhawks won 85-72 at SIUE. The Racers and Redhawks have already met once this season which was a hard-fought 81-73 at the CFSB Center (Feb. 2). The Racers lead the all-time series with SEMO 49-17 and are 24-8 on the road. The Redhawks beat the Racers on their home floor last season. The Racers haven't lost back-to-back games at SEMO since 1943-44.
The games on the Racer TV Network are available to all 100,000-plus Time Warner, Mediacom, Murray Electric and Comcast subscribers at no additional charge.
Time Warner customers will see the broadcasts on channel 16, in all areas west of Kentucky Lake and in Hopkinsville and Madisonville. Mediacom is seen in Marshall, Calloway, Trigg and Caldwell Counties as well as southern Illinois on channel 23. Murray Electric services the city of Murray and carries the games on channels 15 and 18, while Comcast subscribers will see the Racers on channel 17 in McCracken County and southern Illinois.
After securing a share of the Ohio Valley Conference regular season title over the weekend, MSU's 23rd all-time, they can win it outright for the 15th time with a win at SEMO. The Racers have only won three straight outright titles once in their history, coming from 1989-92. The Racers' three straight titles is the first since 2000 when the program won the last of seven straight championships. Coach Steve Prohm is the eighth straight MSU coach to win an OVC regular season championship and the eighth in 10 coaches since the OVC was formed in 1948 to win at least one.
The Racers' 2011-12 season has been one of a shooting star rise to be the top story of the college basketball season. However the final has yet to be written on how this team will takes its place in the MSU tradition. MSU has clinched their 25th straight winning season which is tied with UConn for the fourth-best streak in the nation behind only Syracuse (42), Kansas (29) and Arizona (28).
The Racers are now into their 10th straight week of being ranked in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. This week the Racers are ranked 14th in the coaches poll and 16th in the poll, down from seventh and ninth last week after MSU suffered its first loss last Thursday to Tennessee State. The high rankings for MSU are all-time highs in the MSU program. MSU's previous best ranking was no. 16 twice in the early 1950's. This season's rankings mark the first for the Racers since 1998.
MSU is also the no. 1 team in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll for the fifth straight week. This season marks the first no. 1 ranking in MSU history and the first for an OVC team.
