The Murray State women's tennis team earned a win in their first Ohio Valley Conference match of the season. The Racers (5-7, 1-0 OVC) claimed a 7-0 win over SIU Edwardsville at the Bennie Purcell Tennis courts in Murray, Ky.
“I told my girls we were entering a new season with conference play finally starting,” said head coach Kara Amundson. “We were starting with a clean slate again. I was very proud with how they came out and competed against a good conference opponent. It is never easy to beat a team 7-0. We came out focused and determined and it was a great first conference win for us on the season."
MSU started the match by sweeping the doubles matches. Freshman Jordana Klein and senior Ashley Pierson finished first with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Amanda Miller and Kali Donner. Senior Cassidy Cunitz and junior Ashley Canty then secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Joanna Corkern and Lindsey Raymond. Sophomore Carla Suga and freshman Carolyn Huerth then added an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Carli Connors and Laura Horning.
The Racers swept the singles matches as well, with Suga securing the win for MSU at No. 4 singles. Canty was the first to finish, by defeating Kali Donner at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-3). Klein finished next with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rachel Webb at No. 3 singles.
Suga earned the fourth, and decisive point, with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Haley Ilcewicz at No. 4 singles. Cunitz claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, Huerth took a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles and Pierson added a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 win at No. 6 singles.
The Racers will now be idle until Thursday, March 22 when they host Harding at Bennie Purcell Courts at 1 p.m.
