BOX SCORE
Jacksonville State scored four unanswered runs over the final four innings to defeat Murray State, 5-1, in a great pitching matchup Saturday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field.
MSU starter Tyler Beers (3-4) was the tough-luck loser as he allowed four runs, three earned, on just four hits over six innings. Unfortunately, he was outdueled by JSU starter Daniel Watts (3-5) who allowed just one run on four hits and five strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Closer Todd Hornsby (8) came on to get the save after allowing just one hit over 2.1 innings.
The Gamecocks (15-22, 9-5 OVC) scratched across an unearned run in the fourth as Scott Underwood singled to center and went to second on a passed ball. Sam Eberle singled up the middle to put runners on the corners before a 4-6-3 double play scored the runner from third.
The Breds (19-21, 5-9 OVC) tied the game in the sixth as Travis Isaak was hit by a pitch and hustled around to score on Mike Kozlowski's ringing double off the fence in center field.
JSU regained the lead in the home-half of the inning as Coty Blanchard legged out a triple to left center and scored on Scott Underwood's single to right center.
A pair of walks to the first two hitters in the seventh helped the Gamecocks push across three more runs. After a flyout put runners on the corners with one out, Cal Lambert delivered a pinch-hit two-run double to straight-away center field. A wild pitch and the third walk of the inning put runners on the corners, and the third run of the inning scored on a fielder's choice.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. MSU will send LHP Bryan Babin to the mound, while JSU will counter with RHP Hunter Rivers.
