The eighth-ranked Murray State rifle team shot a season-high team score of 4655 on Thursday but it was not enough as No. 4 Alaska Fairbanks defeated the Racers with a score of 4666.
Kelsey Emme and Tessa Howald led the Racers with a composite score of 1165 in the match. The score of 1165 was the second-best of the season for both Emme and Howald. Howald's air rifle score of 593 is a career-high for Howald and a season-high from any Racer this season in the discipline.
“After struggling a little in smallbore, I was glad to pull it together for a good air rifle,” said Howald.
“Tessa had a great day in air rifle,” said Head Coach Alan Lollar. “She really works hard to be ready to compete at a high level.”
"I was really pleased with the effort today,” commented Lollar. “We had a high score for the year and left points on the table. It confirms what we can do when we put it together."
MSU's team score of 2356 in air rifle was just four points off of the school record in the discipline. Michael Burzynski shot a career-best 588 in air rifle which was the third-best mark on the team. Emme and Bill Harvey paced the Racers with a score of 576 each in smallbore. Kaitlyn Wilson's score of 575 was her second-best output of the season in smallbore.
“Kelsey had a solid day,” said Lollar. “I thought she had a very good day. The way she is training, she has some special days in front of her."
Ryan Limpus also shot a personal best in smallbore with a score of 573. While Marisca Mozeleski shot a career-high score of 579 in air rifle.
"Ryan had a real solid smallbore day at 573, he's really been working hard," said Lollar. “Marisca had a great day all around. She had a good smallbore at 564 and followed with a personal best air rifle at 579."
"I can't say enough about the hard work that is being put in. Glad to see it paying off."
Murray State will return to action on Saturday as they will face another top-five opponent in fifth-ranked Jacksonville State. It will be the fifth time in the last six matches that the Racers and Gamecocks will matchup.
