After a misstep at Southeast Missouri on Monday, the Murray State women's basketball team will look to bounce back with a win on Saturday when it travels to Austin Peay.
Despite an early lead by the Racers, the Redhawks held the momentum for most of the game. Southeast was able to utilize a 16-4 in the middle of the half to extend its lead to a first-half high of 13. However, the Racers did not give up and went on a 9-0 run of their own, to end the half trailing 28-24.
With 0.3 seconds left in the frame and down by seven, freshman Erika Sisk was fouled shooting a three and converted all three shots to cut the deficit to just four at the break.
In the second half, it was all Redhawks. The Racers were outscored 42-31 in the stanza and went almost seven minutes, starting with 16:29 left in the game, without a basket. By the time MSU scored its next basket, with 9:33 to play, the Redhawks had already accumulated an 18 point lead and never allowed the Racers to recover.
Murray State was held to a near season-low field goal percentage of 27.7 in the contest, while Southeast shot 43.1. Despite the struggles from the floor, the Racers did recover from a 64.1 percent free throw shooting performance at UT Martin to finish at 73.7 percent on Monday.
The Racers finished 14-for-19 at the line on the night including a 6-for-7 performance from Sisk. Mariah Robinson led the Racers on the night with 21 points, while Sisk had 14 and Tessa Elkins followed with 11. Jessica Winfrey led MSU on the boards in the game with eight, while Sisk chipped in with six.
On Tuesday, freshman Erika Sisk earned her fourth adidas® OVC Freshman of the Week honor. The Oxford, Miss., native averaged 15.0 points per game last week, with 16 in a win at UT Martin and 14 in a loss at Southeast Missouri. She also added 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Sisk also shot an impressive 40 percent from the floor on the week, as well as 33.3 percent from behind the arch. The freshman also showed resolve by bouncing back from a 5-for-12 free throw performance at UT Martin, to go a near-perfect 6-for-7 at Southeast Missouri.
This week's honor gives Sisk the most of any other OVC freshman, with CoCo Moore of SIU Edwardsville being the only other multiple award-winner with two. With Sisk's four awards and one from teammate Kelsey Dirks, Murray State has won more Freshman of the Week honors this season than the other three winning school combined.
The Racers currently hold a 43-42 lead in the series with Austin Peay, which is now in its 86th meeting. Murray State is 27-14 all-time in Murray, while the Lady Governors lead the series, 26-15, in Clarksville.
The Racers put an end to an eight-game win streak by APSU in the series last March, when they topped the Lady Govs in the OVC tournament. Austin Peay has won the each of the last three meetings in both Clarksville and Murray. The last win in the series for MSU came on Feb. 7, 2009 with a 94-76 victory in Clarksville.
After falling to UT Martin on Monday, Austin Peay is currently 5-9 overall and 0-2 in the OVC. Leslie Martinez led the Lady Govs on the night with 20 point and nine rebounds. Martinez went 9-for-15 from the floor on the night, while also notching three assists, one block and one steal.
Megan Bussabarger currently leads APSU in scoring with 11.4 points per game, while Martinez leads in rebounds with 7.7. The Lady Govs are currently shooting 39.1 percent from the floor, while they are allowing opponents to shoot 44.5.
Tip-off from the Dunn Center in Clarksville is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., and all the action will be broadcast by Kyle Rogers on WNBS 1340 AM. A free live video stream will also be available at OVCDigitalNetwork.com, as well as live stats at GoRacers.com.
