Fresh off a win over SIU Edwardsville, the Murray State women's basketball team will look to push its record against OVC West teams to 4-1 on Monday night, when it host division leaders Eastern Illinois at the CFSB Center.
The game will be the last of the first set of OVC West games for the Racers and could hold significant post-season implications. While the OVC tournament is still a ways off, a win on Monday could hold key tie-breaker implications at the end of the season.
On Saturday, the Racers got a combined 57 points from senior Mariah Robinson and freshman Erika Sisk, as they snapped a two-game home losing streak by topping SIU Edwardsville, 81-68.
The first half went back and forth in the early going, with three ties and two lead changes. However, once the Racers took back the lead with 11:59 left in the opening half, they never allowed the Cougars to regain it. Robinson scored 17 of her game-high 31 points in the first half, including going 5-for-8 from 3-point range.
As a team, MSU ended the half shooting 43.8 percent from the floor and going 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
In the second half, the Racers kept the lead for the entire stanza and led by as many as 20 with 13:35 to play. SIUE cut the lead to 10 twice with under eight minutes to play, including once with just a minute to play, but Murray State battled back each time and never allowed the lead into single digits during the half.
The Racers finished the game shooting 42.1 percent from the floor, their largest shooting percentage of the season against a Division I opponent. MSU also finished the night with an 80.6 free throw percentage, marking the first time since Nov. 29 against Ball State that they have eclipsed the 80 percent mark at the charity stripe.
Robinson tied her season-high by scoring 31 points and set a new season-high by nailing six 3-pointers in the game. Sisk also tied a season and career-high by scoring 26 points, while also setting a new season and career mark with eight made free throws, to finish the night at 8-for -11.
Monday will be the 39th team the two teams have met overall and the 20th time they have met in Murray. The Racers lead the all-time series 23-15 and 14-5 at home. Despite the Murray advantage, the Panthers have gained significant ground in the series in recent years. EIU has now won the last three consecutive meetings and five of the last six.
The two teams have gone into overtime twice in the series, with both occasions occurring in Charleston. EIU won the first encounter, 75-70, in 2005, while Murray won the second, 85-69, in 2009.
The Panthers enter Monday at 11-7 overall and 5-1 in the OVC and are coming off handing of a 68-43 drubbing of Austin Peay on Saturday. Ta'Kenya Nixon led the Panthers in the win with 18 points, while Sydney Mitchell came off the bench to notch a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Nixon currently leads EIU in scoring this season at 13.4 points per game, while Sabina Oroszova leading the Panthers on the boards with 6.4. As a team, the Panthers are scoring just over one point more than their opponents per game with a 1.1 scoring margin and are also rebounding their opponents by 4.5 per game.
