The Murray State women's basketball team will look to extend its current win-streak to five on Saturday when it hosts Austin Peay at the CFSB Center. Not only will the Racers be looking continue their winning ways, but they will be looking for the first regular-season sweep of the Lady Govs since the 2008-09 season.
The Racers won their fourth consecutive game on Monday night, when they knocked off Tennessee Tech, 68-52. MSU opened the game on 9-0 run and never looked back from there.
Tennessee Tech never led or tied in the game and after the initial 9-0 run by Murray State only cut the lead to less than five points on one occasion. Each time the Golden Eagles put together an extended run in the contest, the Racers answered with a run of their own. The Racers led by as many 20 in the game and never led by less than 10 points in the second half.
Sharp shooting was the key to the game for the Racers, as they shot an OVC season-high 48.1 percent from the floor. The percentage is also the highest MSU has shot this season against a Division I team.
While MSU's overall shooting was impressive, the hot hands were not limited to the overall shooting. The Racers also went 10-for-18 from 3-point range, turning in their best percentage of the season from beyond the arc at 55.6.
Another key to victory was the total team effort by MSU. Of the 13 players that saw action, 10 found their way on to the score sheet.
Senior Mariah Robinson led the Racers with 16 points, while Sisk followed with 12. Junior Jessica Winfrey led the game with 11 boards for her third-straight double-digit rebound effort.
On Tuesday, freshman Erika Sisk, was named as the adidas® OVC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the seventh time this season and for the fourth time in as many weeks. Sisk helped pace the Racers to their third and fourth straight wins last week, averaging 17.0 points per game over the stretch.
The native of Oxford, Miss., put up 22 points in a win at Jacksonville State on Saturday and then followed it up with 12 points at Tennessee Tech Monday. Sisk was the second-highest scoring player in each of the two games for MSU last week and finished just 3.0 points per game behind senior Mariah Robinson.
The freshman finished the week shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 22.2 percent from 3-point range and 50.0 from the free-throw line. Additionally, she added 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 25 assists per game to MSU's cause last week.
On Saturday, the Racers will host the 87th all-time meeting with Austin Peay, with MSU leading the series 44-42. Murray State is 27-14 all-time in Murray, while the Lady Governors lead the series, 26-16, in Clarksville.
The Racers put an end to three-game win streak by the Lady Govs in Clarksville by topping APSU, 77-72 on January 12. Despite snapping the road streak and winning streak in the last two games of the series, the Racers have still lost their last three meetings with the Lady Govs in Murray. The last win for MSU at the CFSB Center came on Jan. 10, 2009, when they defeated APSU, 87-77.
The Lady Govs will enter Saturday's game at 6-14 overall and 1-7 in the OVC. Austin Peay recently snapped a 7-game losing streak when they topped Jacksonville State, 78-71, on the road. Leslie Martinez led the Lady Govs with 18, while Meghan Bussabarger added 17.
Bussabarger currently leads the Lady Govs on the year with 12.8 points, while Martinez leads the team with 7.8 rebounds. Austin Peay currently has a negative scoring margin of 8.2 points and also has a negative rebounding margin at 7.6.
Tip-off from the CFSB Center is set for 2:15 p.m., or approximately 30 minutes after the end of the men's game. Kyle Rogers is set to bring fans all the action on 1340 AM WNBS.
Rogers' play-by-play will also be featured on a free live video stream on OVCDigitalnetwork.com. Fans not able to attend, watch online or listen, can still follow the action on a computer or mobile device with free live stats at GoRacers.com.
