Racer volleyball may get a sense of déjà vu this weekend as they welcome Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville to Racer Arena Friday and Saturday night. Just a week ago Murray State traveled to Illinois to take on these very same teams, dropping both matches, 3-1.
The "mirror" weekend kicks off with the second leg of a home-and-home with EIU Friday night at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against SIUE.
The losses last weekend extend a season-long-tying three game losing streak, their second in the month of October.
The battle with SIUE pitted a pair of NCAA top-10 teams in digs against one another. As expected, there was plenty of defense, a combined 144 digs in four sets. After falling in set No. 1, the Racers pulled out a 30-28 victory in extra points, but couldn't secure another set win, losing in four, 3-1.
Alyssa Lelm, Taylor Olden and Scottie Ingram all registered 12 kills for the Racers. Ingram and Olden completed the double-double with 15 and 13 digs respectively.
Saturday night's battle with Eastern Illinois proved to be a tough one. In the three set losses, the Racers lost by a combined nine points as each set came down to the wire.
The Racers held a late lead in the fourth set, which would have forced a fifth and deciding set, but couldn't hold on, allowing EIU to comeback from a 21-18 deficit.
Emily Schmahl picked up a season-high 15 kills in the set and Taylor Olden recorded her third double-double in four games with 14 kills and 18 digs.Â
Murray State also knocked down a season-high 11 blocks. Olden, Ingram and Kamille Jones each picked up four blocks to lead the team.
The Racer offense has been playing well of late. Setter Sam Bedard is currently on a four game double-double streak. Middle blocker Alyssa Lelm became just the second current Racer to reach 400 kills last weekend at SIUE. Since her return, outside hitter Emily Schmahl leads the Racers with 44 kills in four matches. She recorded a season-high 15 kills her last match against EIU.
Eastern Illinois holds a 26-13 lead all-time against the Racers. They have also won three in a row, including last Saturday night's match. Murray State does hold an 11-7 advantage all-time at Racer Arena. After dropping two conference matches, the Panthers have stormed back with two wins over MSU and Austin Peay.
The Panthers lead the OVC in three major offensive categories: kills per set (13.70), attack percentage (.221) and assists per set (12.70). In conference play, the Panthers have been even better, averaging 14.36 kills per set and 13.76 assists per set. They are ranked just outside the NCAA top-50 in both categories, 52nd in kills per set and 54th in assists per set.Â
Outside hitters and Reynae Hutchinson and Chelsea Lee average more kills than any other pair of teammates in the OVC at 3.36 and 3.30 respectively. The Panthers also see a significant contribution from middle blocker Stephanie Arnold, who is third in the OVC with a .345 attack percentage. EIU's offense is centered around setter Marah Bradbury. Bradbury, a three time OVC setter of the week, leads the OVC in assists per set and is ranked 38th in the NCAA.
At 4-4, SIUE is tied with Southeast Missouri and for third place in the West Division of the OVC. The Cougars have not won back-to-back games since the beginning of October.
Like the Racers, SIUE is in the top 10 in the NCAA in digs. The Cougars rank tenth in the nation with 17.45 digs per set. What separates the Cougars has been libero Chelsea Colclasure, who sits at No. 15 in the NCAA and tops in the OVC with 5.39 digs per set. Colclasure is one of two players in the OVC with more than 400 digs and five digs per set this season. SIUE is also near the top of the OVC in opponent hitting percentage. The Cougars come in at No. 4 in the conference, holding opponents to a .187 attack percentage.
Offensively, senior Cori Harris leads a Cougar attack with 231 kills. Harris' 123 kills and 139 points in conference play are second in the OVC. Senior Kelsey Augustine is one of just five athletes in the OVC with at least 200 kills and a .268 attack percentage.Â
