After dropping two straight OVC matches, Murray State women's volleyball team looks to get back on track Saturday against Morehead State. The Racers will be playing just their second home game of the season, 25 days after their home opener against Evansville.
Â
Earlier in the week against Austin Peay, Murray State held a 2-1 match lead over the Governors, but couldn't hold on as they fell 3-2, slipping to 1-2 in the OVC. The Racers took the first and third sets against Austin Peay, 25-22, but the Governors tied the match at two with a 25-15 win in the fourth set. The Governors looked as though they were going to easily take the fifth and deciding set, jumping out to an 11-5 lead. Murray State clawed back to tie the match at 13-13. However that's as far as the Racers came as Austin Peay ended the contest on a pair of kills by Liz Landon.
Â
The Governors held a distinct edge on the defensive side. Murray State entered the match #4 in the NCAA in digs per set, but Austin Peay controlled that aspect, out-digging the Racers 74-57. Peay also landed nine more total blocks, holding a 12-3 advantage.
Â
Scottie Ingram led the Racers with 18 kills and picked up her sixth straight double-double with 13 digs. Alyssa Lelm continued her solid play as well, finishing with 17 kills and a .342 attack percentage.
Â
Saturday will mark the 65th meeting between the Racers and Morehead State. The Eagles hold a 38-26 advantage all-time and, more recently, have won eight consecutive matches. History shows the Racers have gotten the better of the Eagles at home with a 15-10 home record, but Morehead has won four straight at Racer Arena.
Â
The Eagles are a veteran group, boasting three seniors and three juniors, all of whom play a major role. Morehead State, last year's OVC Tournament runners-up, has won 25 straight conference matches overall and 25 straight OVC road matches. They are 55-2 in conference play the last three seasons.
Â
Senior libero Leslie Schellhaas has been named OVC defensive Player of the Week three times in 2013. She leads the Eagles with 343 digs and has racked up 1,890 in her career. Middle Blocker Laura McDermott earned her first ever OVC Offensive Player of the Week this past week. In three matches, McDermott landed 36 kills and had a .359 attack percentage.Â
