Murray State Rifle team, ranked #9 in the preseason CRCA rankings, opened their season at the Ole Miss Invitational. The Racers brought six student-athletes to compete in both smallbore and air rifle. The team finished with an aggregate score of 4636, 2288 in smallbore and 2348 in air rifle.
Competing in his first collegiate meet, freshman Jack Berhorst led the Racers in the smallbore discipline with a score of 576. Combined with his 583 in air rifle, Berhorst's aggregate of 1159 was second on the team. Speaking after his first match, a jubilant Berhorst had this to say, "I had so much fun! It definitely was one of the most intense matches I'd ever shot in. It was really good to have teammates there to help me out during the rough parts."
Â
Kelsey Emme, second-team All-American in air rifle in 2012-13, led MSU with an aggregate score of 1160. She finished with a 572 in smallbore and 588 in air rifle. "The match had its ups and downs, but it was a good indicator of the areas that I need to focus on most", said Emme.
Â
Also competing in her first collegiate match was freshman Katarina Bisercic. Bisercic was the team's top scorer in air rifle, firing a 589. She finished the afternoon with an 1151 aggregate. Bisercic was pleased with the way she was able to finish her first meet, saying, "I am happy to be at Murray State and am looking forward to the season. I'm glad I was able to come back with a good air rifle match, after a little bit of a slow start in smallbore. I am looking forward to our next competition."
Â
Also competing for the Racers were senior Bill Harvey and sophomores Tessa Howald and Kaitlyn Wilson. Howald shot an 1154 aggregate (566 SB, 588 AR), Wilson fired an 1143 (563 SB, 580 AR) and Harvey totaled 1142 (574 SB, 568 AR). Â
Following the match, head coach Alan Loller spoke about his team, "I thought it was a pretty good start. We have been training hard on some specific areas and I think we have seen improvement. Our air rifle score was better than all but one time last year. Smallbore was right at our average from last year, so I think we are better, and showing the potential to compete pretty well."
Â
"Individually, Kelsey (Emme), Katy (Bisercic) and Tessa (Howald) all had good air rifle days. I thought Jack (Berhorst), Bill (Harvey) and Kelsey (Emme) were solid in smallbore."
Â
"I'm looking forward to two weeks to train and get ready for our first home match, the Sunday after Homecoming against, Morehead State and Columbus State."Â
Â
The Racers are right back in action Sunday afternoon for an OVC dual match with UT Martin in Martin, Tenn.Â
