The Murray State Racers hit the road for a second straight weekend when they travel to Norfolk, Va., to meet the Old Dominion Monarchs at the Ted Constant Center in a 6 p.m. central time tip off Friday. The Racer Radio Network will air the game on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Live online streaming video from ODUSports.com is free of charge.
The Racers and Monarchs are meeting in back-to-back seasons after they played in 2012 in Murray, Ky. The Racers came away with a 79-72 win. The Racers have four players from the game last season still on the team, while ODU has 7-of-10. The Racers lead the all-time series 2-0 with the other meeting that was a MSU win in 1990 in the Puerto Rico Classic 76-61.
The Racers (1-1) have two games in the books this season after losing a tight game (Nov. 8) at Valparaiso 77-74 and claiming a 97-69 win in the home opener Tuesday against Brescia. Freshman Cameron Payne made his MSU debut at Valpo with 21 points. MSU won its 24th straight home with four players set career highs in scoring. Jeffery Moss had 21 points while Dexter Fields scored 10 with 15 from C.J. Ford. Jarvis Williams scored 14 for a career-high and also hauled in 14 rebounds.
Old Dominion is also 1-1 after a 77-57 win at home Wednesday over Howard. The Monarchs led 35-29 at the half, but locked down Howard and won the second half 42-28. ODU kept the opponent to 29 percent shooting and made 50 percent of their own shots.
Once again the Racers are defending the three-point shot as they have done in the last several seasons. Through two games, opponents are shooting 26 precent (8-of-30). MSU has also made a nice gain from the free throw line where they've made 72 percent (52-72). ODU has struggled from the free throw line in the first two games hitting 49 percent (27-of-55). Aaron Bacote leads ODU with 24 points per game and Richard Ross grabs 11.0 rebounds. Dexter Fields leads the Racers with 16 points per game and Jarvis Williams leads in rebound with 10.5 per game.
National Signing Day was Wednesday of this week and the Racers picked up guard JayQuan McCloud out of North Chicago, Ill. McCloud, a 6-2 guard, will be a freshman with the Racers in the fall of 2014. McCloud joins a 2014 class that includes Utah transfer Justin Seymour who is with the team this season and sitting out per NCAA transfer rules. Seymour is a 6-3 guard from Atlanta, Ga.
After the game with Old Dominion, the Racers are back at the CFSB Center Tuesday for a game 7 p.m. against the Bethel Wildcats. MSU goes back on the road Nov. 23 for a 7 p.m. game at Auburn.
