For the third straight weekend, the Murray State Racers are on the road when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to face the Auburn Tigers in a 7 p.m. game Saturday at the Auburn Arena. The Racer Radio Network will air at 6:30 p.m. on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Live online streaming video is available from AuburnTigers.com.
The Racers are meeting the Tigers at Auburn for the second time after their first meeting in 1996. Auburn leads the all-time series 2-1 with an 86-72 win at home in 1996 and a 72-53 win in 2002 in Birmingham. Murray State's win came last season at the Charleston Classic in their opening game 79-59. MSU will play in the Tigers' new home, the Auburn Arena that opened in 2010.
Murray State is 10-23 all-time against teams from the Southeastern Conference and 5-11 since 1991. MSU's most famous win over an SEC foe was in the 2010 NCAA Tournament when Danero Thomas' jumper beat the buzzer in a 66-65 win over Vanderbilt in San Jose, Calif. The Racers have played Mississippi State seven times for their most against an SEC team, but have never met Florida, Kentucky, LSU and South Carolina.
MSU has alternated wins and losses through four games this season with a pair of home wins and a pair of road losses. The Racers (2-2) defeated Bethel on Tuesday at home 91-64 getting 25 points and 13 rebounds from Jarvis Williams as he recorded his third straight double-double. Dexter Fields scored 21 points.
Auburn (2-1) lost at home (Nov. 15) 111-92 to Northwestern State when the Demons scored an amazing 72 points in the second half. The Tigers rebounded Tuesday and routed Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State 78-54 and held the Gamecocks to 19 first half points.
Fields leads four Racers in double-figure scoring at 15.8 points per game, while Williams is at 15.0 and pulling down a team-high 11.5 rebounds. Cameron Payne has 23 assists in four games and is scoring 13.5 points per game, while Jeffery Moss is at 12.3. Chris Denson leads the Tigers with 21.3 points per game and is second on the squad with 6.3 rebounds per game behind Asauhn Dixon-Tatum who is getting 7.0 rebounds. Â
After the game with Auburn, the Racers come home Tuesday (Nov. 26) for their first meeting with former OVC rival Middle Tennessee since 2003. After Thanksgiving, the Racers travel to Moraga, Calif., to face the Saint Mary's Gaels. It's a return game after their classic 2012 meeting at the CFSB Center when both teams were ranked in the top-15 and legendary broadcaster Dick Vitale called the game on the Racers' home court.
