Here We Go! Racers Open OVC At Home With SEMO

The Murray State Racers meet the Southeast Missouri Redhawks in their Ohio Valley Conference opener and the first game of 2014 Thursday in Murray, Ky. The game tips at 7 p.m. on the Racers' home court at the CFSB Center. The game can be heard on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The Racers meet the Redhawks in the OVC season opener and they'll close the regular season when they meet in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on March 1. The last time the Racers opened and closed a conference season with the same team was in the 2010-11 season with Eastern Kentucky.
MSU has won their last five OVC openers with wins the last two seasons over UT Martin and three against Eastern Kentucky. MSU's last OVC opener loss was at home to EKU in 2007 on a Mike Rose buzzer beater. MSU lost their OVC home opener a season ago to EKU which broke a five game win streak since a prior loss which was the same buzzer shot game by EKU in 2007.
MSU and SEMO were the favorites to win the OVC West Division in the preseason poll. SEMO received 13 first place votes, while the Racers got 11.
The Racers (5-7) are coming off back-to-back road losses. MSU lost at Western Kentucky 71-64 (Dec. 21) and then lost 72-51 Sunday at Dayton. MSU is 5-1 at home this season and have won three straight. They defeated Evansville 65-63 (Dec. 4), Lipscomb 73-69 (Dec. 7) and Southern Illinois (Dec. 14).
SEMO (8-5) erased a 20-point second half deficit on Sunday at Missouri State, but eventually lost in overtime to the Bears 81-78. The Redhawks are 2-4 away from home this season.
The Racers have two players in the top-15 scorers in the OVC Â with Jarvis Williams and OVC Freshman of the Year candidate Cameron Payne each at 13.0 points per game ranked 13th. Williams second in the OVC with 9.9 rebounds per game, while Payne is third in the league with 5.5 assists per game. Williams has six double-digit rebound games this season and three others with nine rebounds. Dexter Fields ranks 10th among current OVC players in made 3-point baskets with 79.
The CFSB Center is hosting its 16th season of MSU Basketball where the Racers are 187-33 (.850) including a mark of 78-11 (.850) in OVC games. MSU did drop its last two home games at the end of last season to UT Martin and the Redhawks.Â

The Racers' rare season with three Friday and two Sunday games continues this Sunday when they host the UT Martin Skyhawks at the CFSB Center at 2 p.m. The game will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
