The Murray State women's basketball team closed out the home portion of its non-conference schedule with a relatively easy 88-47 win over New Orleans Saturday at the CFSB Center.
The Privateers (0-7) came out in the beginning of the game and took advantage of missed shots by the Racers to take an early 8-4 lead. However, from that point, Murray State (6-3) buckled down and went on a 20-2 run and never looked back.
Murray State did all the things they need to do in order to win the game including outshooting, and outrebounding the Privateers, 43.4-24.6 and 56-57, respectively. The Racers also dished out 13 assists as a unit, compared to just 6 total turnovers. The game also marks the second time this season that every Racer that entered the game scored.
Keiona Kirby led MSU in the contest with the first double-double of her career of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Winfrey also pulled down a double-double in the contest with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was Winfrey's third of the season and second in the past three games.
Nikia Edom registered 12 points in her first career start, while Chanyere Hosey came off the bench to score seven points and gather eight rebounds. Melissa Jensen led New Orleans with her own double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Mathilde Fogelstrom followed with seven points and eight rebounds.
The Racers will now hit the road for four consecutive games, including their OVC opener, and will not return to The Bank until the New Year. First up for Murray State on the road will be a trip to Alabama A&M next Saturday. Tip-off from Huntsville is set for 2 p.m.
