The Murray State women's basketball team locked up its 15th consecutive OVC tournament appearance on Monday by topping Morehead State, 56-48, at Johnson Arena in Morehead.
The first half was flat for the Racers (16-11, 8-7), as they struggled both shooting and rebounding the ball early in the game. However, Murray State was able to chip away at the lead to end the half on a 14-5 run and tie the game at 25 at the break.
Despite the late run, Morehead State outshot the Racers 45.5 to 33.3 percent in the frame. The Eagles also outworked Murray State on the boards in the half by a 19-12 margin.
However, the Racers would not give in and opened the second on a 16-3 run and never looked back. Despite trailing by as many as 16 in the stanza, Morehead went on a 12-5 late in the game to cut the lead to seven. That would be as close as the Eagles would get though, as Murray held on for the eight point victory.
As much as the first half belonged to Morehead, the second was all Racers. Murray State shot 41.4 percent from the floor in the half, including 40.0 percent from 3-point range, compared to just 24.0 and 23.5, respectively, for the Eagles. The Racers also dominated the boards in the second half, outrebounding Morehead, 25-12.
Erika Sisk and Keiona Kirby led Murray State in the game with 14 each, while Mariah Robinson had 12. Jessica Winfrey had a team-high eight boards for the Racers, while Robinson and Sisk added six each.
Morehead State's Terrice Robinson had a game-high 18, while Allie Turner added 11. Mackenzie Arledge pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, with eight coming in the first half.
On Saturday, Murray State will close out their regular-season slate with Senior Day at the CFSB Center. The Racers will take on Southeast Missouri at 4:45 p.m., followed by a men's game at 7:30 p.m. All fans in attendance are encouraged to participate in the “Code Blue” promotion by wearing navy blue to the game.
