Isaiah Canaan led MSU with 31 points on 10-of-10 shooting from the free throw line as he had his eighth career 30-point game and his fourth this season. Ed Daniel had his 14th double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
MSU had a poor shooting night and led for the last time when the score was 6-4. MSU fell behind 33-19 with 4:30 to go in the half and managed to cut the lead to 36-27 at half.
MSU made several runs at the lead in the second half, but never got there although they did tie it 40-40 at the 14:43 mark on a Canaan three-pointer.
With 1:11 remaining MSU trailed the Skyhawks 67-62 and made a run to pull the game out when Canaan sank a three from the corner with 58 seconds left to cut the UTM lead to two. After forcing a shot clock violation, Daniel was fouled with 8.6 seconds left and hit one of two free throws to make it a 67-66 game. With 4.5 left, Canaan was fouled and made a pair of free throws and again MSU trailed by a point at 69-68. When UTM's B.J. McLaughlin missed two from the line, the Racers had one more shot, but Canaan's long three-point try was no good as the buzzer sounded.
