The Murray State Racers used a 23-6 run in the final 8:19 to take the Tennessee State Tigers in a 69-48 win Saturday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The win was MSU's seventh in their last eight moving their overall mark to 18-5 and 9-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. TSU fell to 14-11 and 8-4.
Ed Daniel and Brandon Garrett each had a double-double. Daniel had his 13th of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with a career-high six blocks. Garrett had his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Canaan tossed in 16 to the Racer attack.
MSU led 37-27 with 17:36 left on a rebound and score from Garrett, but after TSU cut the lead to two (42-40) with 13:00 remaining, the Racers needed something to turn the momentum and they got it.
With 9:07 left, Canaan made a spinning shot in the lane for a 46-40 lead and Garrett pushed it to eight (50-42) at the 7:03 mark. Daniel scored in the lane for another eight-point lead (52-44) with 4:33 remaining. MSU held the Tigers to three straight fruitless possessions and took a 54-44 lead on two Canaan free throws with 3:33 left.
The Racers defense was indeed the difference in the outcome as they finished the game on a 23-6 run in the final 8:19.
MSU held TSU to 29 percent from the field (17-of-59) and forced the Tigers into 19 turnovers. MSU managed 43 percent from the field (21-of-49) but were really big from the free throw line where they shot 76 percent (22-of-29), while TSU only got to the line 13 times and made 11 for 85 percent.
In the first half, MSU only trailed once when it was 3-2.
The Racers had a 9-2 run to take a 23-11 lead at the 6:51 mark when C.J. Ford made a driving basket. MSU took an 11-point lead with 2:07 left on a put-back by Latreze Mushatt, but two free throws by TSU's Michael Green cut the lead to 32-23 at the half.
Now the Racers prepare for the start of a three-game road swing when they play Thursday at SIUE in a 7 p.m. tip at the Valadabene Center in Edwardsville Ill. On Saturday (Feb. 16) MSU has a 6 p.m. tip in Charleston, Ill., against Eastern Illinois. MSU's third straight game on the road is at Morehead State (Feb. 20).
All three games will air on the Racer TV Network, ESPN3 and the OVC Digital Network. All MSU games are heard on Racer Radio over the air on WFGE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com.
Game Notes
The pair of double-doubles tonight from Daniel and Garrett marks the first for MSU since Isacc Miles and Ivan Aska did it against UT Martin at the CFSB Center in 2009. On Feb. 23, Miles recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against the Skyhawks, while Aska scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in MSU's 74-59 win.
Daniel has 13 double-doubles this season as the most for a MSU player since James Singleton had 18 in the 2002-03 season.
Daniel's six blocked shots is a career-high surpassing the five he had at Lipscomb this season (Nov. 26).
Daniel now has 149 career blocks and is taking aim at all-time leader Cuthbert Victor (2000-04) at 160.
Isaiah Canaan pushed his school-record of consecutive games with a made three-point basket to 32.
Canaan's 18 points gives him 1,857 as he looks to become the sixth member of the MSU 2000-Point Club and the 17th in the OVC group.
In their 88th season of college basketball, Murray State is closing in on the program's 1,500th win. MSU is now 1,496-829.
The MSU senior class of Canaan, Daniel and Jordan Burge have 103 wins and are one win off the record of 104 that was set last season by Ivan Aska, Jewuan Long and Donte Poole.
The Racers are 21-0 in the Steve Prohm era when holding opponents under 60 points. MSU has held seven teams under 60 this season.
Prohm is 49-7 in his second season as MSU coach and is one win from becoming the fastest to 50 wins in MSU history. Mick Cronin (now head coach at Cincinnati) made it to 50 wins in 69 games from 2003-05.
MSU is 49-7 (.875) in the Prohm era, 71-16 (.816) in the last three seasons and 103-21 (.830) in the last four seasons.
