Racer Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season

The Murray State track and field team opened up its outdoor season over the weekend as the Racers traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational.
The Racers picked up a pair of second place finishes at the meet. All-American Alexis Love ran a time of 11.47 in the 100 meter dash to take second for MSU. Sharda Bettis took home the other second-place finish at the meet. Bettis set a new career-best in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.68. Bettis also took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 1:03.16.
Bettis and Love joined LaShea Shaw and Hannah McAllister on the 4x100 meter relay team for the Racers that took third place with a time of 46.22. Tonia Pratt picked up three top-10 finishes at the meet for the Racers. Pratt took fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 174'-7,” seventh in the shot put with a throw of 45'-7” and also took 10th in the discus with a heave of 138'-01”.
The Racers picked up two top-10 finishes in the high jump over the weekend. Ashley Conway and Shaw both had jumps of 5'-03” on Saturday. Conway took sixth while Shaw was 10th since Conway cleared the height in fewer attempts. The mark tied a career-high for Shaw in the event.
The 4x800 team of Abbie Oliver, Natalie Pattin, Brittany Bohn and Emma Gilmore grabbed MSU's other top-10 finish, placing sixth and running a time of 9:26.43.
The Racers will return to action next weekend as they will travel to Missouri for the St. Louis University Billiken Track and Field Kick Off.
