Austin Peay used a big fifth inning to jump out to a big lead and hand Murray State a 10-3 defeat Friday afternoon in the middle game of a three-game series at Reagan Field.
The Govs (21-5, 6-1 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as P.J. Torres followed a base hit and a hit by pitch with a three-run home run just over the fence in left field.
The Breds (12-14, 6-5 OVC) got a run back in the home-half of the third as Noah Zipko started the frame with a double into the gap in left center. After moving to third on a Nick Paradossi groundout, Paul Ritzheimer delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
APSU broke the game wide open in the fifth inning as they pushed across seven runs, with the help of a costly two-out error. A pair of base hits started the inning before Rolando Gautier plated both runners with a single up the middle. After a passed ball scored the third run, a dropped throw by the first baseman kept the inning alive. Cody Hudson followed by hitting next pitch through the right side for an RBI single and Reed Harper delivered the big blow, a three-run home run to left field.
MSU got a run back in the seventh as a two-out rally was started by an errand throw from the first baseman to pitcher covering the bag. Brandon Elliott followed with a single through the right side, and Greg Guest delivered an RBI single to right field.
The Breds closed out the scoring with an unearned run in the ninth. Mike Kozlowski was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After moving to second on a passed ball and taking third on defensive indifference, a wild pitch allowed Kozlowski to score.
Cashtyn DeLeeuw (2-1) took the loss after allowing 10 runs, five earned, on nine hits over 4.2 innings. Casey Delgado (5-1) earned the victory after allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits and 10 strikeouts over seven innings.
Reliever Sheldon Baxter had one of his best outings of his career as he allowed four hits and struck out five over 4.1 shutout innings.
Zipko paced the offense by going 2-for-2 with a double, while Guest went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk.
The two teams will close out the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
