Breds Battle Govs in Finale
3/30/2013 3:41:00 PM | Baseball
Murray State had plenty of base runners, but only managed to push across four runs as the Breds dropped a tough 6-4 defeat to Austin Peay Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Govs (22-5, 7-1 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as the first two pitches of the inning resulted in base hits. A groundout moved both runners, and Kevin Corey followed with a chopper that resulted in an RBI groundout.
The Breds (12-15, 6-6 OVC) got back even in the home-half of the inning with Mike Kozlowski drawing a leadoff walk and going to second on a groundout. With two outs, Noah Zipko delivered an RBI single to left field.
APSU regained the lead in the third as they loaded the bases with three-straight one-out singles. Reed Harper followed with a two-run single to right center.
A two-out rally in the fourth pushed across another run for APSU. Rolando Gautier started things with a double to left center and scored on Dylan Riner's single to left center.
MSU had a chance for a big inning in the fifth as they loaded the bases with no outs, but only managed to push across one run. Paul Ritzheimer started the inning with a single up the middle, and was followed by a Ty Stetson walk and a Taylor Mathews bunt single. Brandon Eggenschwiler drove in a run with a fielder's choice up the middle, but a foul out and a groundout ended the inning without anymore runs scoring.
The Govs came right back in the sixth and loaded the bases with one out for a two-run single through the right side off the bat of Jordan Hankins.
The Breds got one of those runs back in the home-half of the inning as Stetson collected the third of three hits in the inning, an RBI single back through the middle.
MSU added another run in the eighth as Greg Guest started the inning with a double to right field and later scored on a Ritzheimer two-out single up the middle.
Andrew Bramley (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits and three strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Ryan Quick (3-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on four hits, five walks and three strikeouts over five innings. Tyler Rogers (10) picked up the save after allowing two hits in his one inning of work.
Ritzheimer led the offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Zipko continued to swing a hot bat as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Stetson and Mathews each collected two hits as the Breds had 11 as a team.
The Breds return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to face Southern Illinois at 3 p.m.
