The Breds return to OVC action as they travel to face Tennessee Tech on April 26-28. The series gets underway Friday at 6 p.m.
Weekend Weather
The weather could play a factor in the weekend series. Friday should be a great night for baseball with temperatures reaching 70 degrees. Things get interesting on Saturday with a 60% chance of showers, followed by a 40% chance of rain on Sunday.
vs. Tennessee Tech
The Breds trail 80-70-1 in the all-time series against the Golden Eagles, but have dropped four straight, and nine of the last 11 in the series. MSU was swept in the three-game series in Cookeville last season.
Three Series Sweeps
Murray State has completed three series sweeps in 2013, after only completing one sweep a season ago. It is the most series sweeps in a season since the Breds swept four series during the 2010 season.
Stetson Reaches in 7-Straight PA
Junior Ty Stetson reached safely in seven-straight plate appearances over three games last week. The streak began with a single in his last at-bat against Memphis. He then followed it up by reaching safely in all five plate appearances (3 hits, walk, hit by pitch) against Mid-Continent. He got a base hit in his first at-bat against Alabama A&M before ending the streak in his next at bat.
Maerz Doesn't Allow Run
Freshman Cody Maerz did not allow a run in two starts last week. He tossed 4.1 shutout innings against Mid-Continent before his day ended prematurely with a 64 minute lightning delay. He came back on Saturday and tossed five shutout innings to earn the victory against Alabama A&M.
Big Inning
The Breds had their biggest inning of the season in the opener against Alabama A&M as they scored 11 runs in fourth inning. It was the biggest inning for the Breds since scoring 14 runs in the third inning against Tennessee Tech on April 23, 2005. It was also the first time the Breds scored double digits in an inning since scoring 10 runs in the eighth inning against SIU Edwardsville on April 27, 2012.
Back-to-Back Shutout Games
The Breds were involved in a pair of shutouts against Memphis and Mid-Continent. MSU shut out MCU, just one day after being shut out by UM. It marked the second time in the last three years that this has happened. On May 3, 2011, the Breds defeated Belmont, 7-0, in the first game of a doubleheader, and then fell, 3-0, in the second game.
Breds Toss 2nd Shutout
Three Breds pitchers combined to throw the Breds second shutout of the season. Cody Maerz started and tossed 4.1 shutout innings before being taken out after a 1:04 lighting delay. Andrew Bramley followed by throwing 4.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and fanning four. Alex Gordon needed only one pitch to close out the game with a pop up.
Breds Shutout
Murray State suffered its first shutout in 101 games at the hands of Memphis. It was the first time the Breds failed to score since losing 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader at Belmont on May 3, 2011.
Paradossi Shows Off Arm
Catcher Nick Paradossi showed off his arm against Memphis as he picked off a runner at first and threw out a potential base stealer. He also went 2-for-2 at the plate, while also being hit by a pitch.
15-Inning Game
The Breds played their fifth extra-inning game of the season on Saturday, this time playing a season-long 15 innings against Jacksonville State. The game took 4:10 to play, and was only bested by last season's 17-inning game at Central Arkansas.
DeLeeuw Goes 9 Strong
Cashtyn DeLeeuw did not get a decision against Jacksonville State despite throwing nine strong innings. The junior allowed just two runs on five hits, while striking out a career-high seven.
Rare Win vs. Evansville
Murray State picked up a rare victory against Evansville when the Breds handed the Purple Aces a 12-6 defeat on April 10. It was just the second victory in the last 17 meetings dating back to 2005.
Top 5 in Order
The top five hitters in the MSU lineup went 11-for-19 with 11 RBIs and nine runs scored in the 12-6 victory over Evansville. Mike Kozlowski drove in four runs, while Dylan Wheeler added three RBIs. Brandon Elliott drove in a pair, while Ty Stetson and Brandon Eggenschwiler each plated one.
On Deck
The Breds hit the road for a pair of non-conference games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on April 30-May 1.
