Racers Open OVC Championships With Strong Day One

Tonia Pratt and Sydney Potts took home the women's discus and javelin titles, respectively for the Racers Friday afternoon at the OVC Outdoor Championships hosted by Eastern Illinois. Pratt recorded a throw of 152'-3” in the event. The toss is the fourth-best throw in school history. Potts' throw of 127'-11” in the javelin set a new season-best for her.
The Racers had a strong showing in the high jump at the meet as LaShea Shaw and Ashley Conway placed second and third, respectively. Shaw smashed her PR in the event by over five inches, recording a leap of 5'-7.5”. Conway's best jump set a new season-high for her, recording a mark of 5'-5.75”.
Murray State had a great day in the prelims of the sprints as well. All-American Alexis Love qualified with the best preliminary time in the 100-meter dash and the second-best mark in the 200-meter dash. Love recorded a season-best time in both events as she ran a time of 11.51 in the 100 and 24.10 in the 200. Love broke the OVC record in the 200 at last year's OVC Championships, will defend both her 100 and 200 conference titles in Saturday's finals.
Carolyne Tanui used a strong kick on the final lap of the 10,000 to place second in the race for MSU. Tanui finished with a time of 38:36.03.
Sharda Bettis had a big day in the prelims of her two hurdles races Friday. Bettis recorded the second-fastest time in the prelims in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.75, winning her heat. Bettis also won her heat in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.28.
Shaw qualified with the fourth-best time in the 100 hurdles, finishing with a time of 14.08 in the event. Shaw also placed second in her heat behind Bettis in the 400 hurdles, running a time of 1:02.62.
Brittany Bohn placed 10th for the Racers in the opening event of the meet, the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Bohn finished with a time of 11:43.66. Natalie Pattin in the 800 (2:16.14) and KeLai Hicks in the 400 (1:01.29) set new PRs on the day for MSU.
After day one, the Racers sit in third place with a team score of 43. Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. Running events kick off at 1 with the 4x100 meter relay.
