The Murray State women's basketball team will host rival Austin Peay Saturday at the CFSB Center at 5:15 p.m. The Racers are coming off an extended break since last Saturday's loss to UT Martin, after a power outage to the main MSU campus postponed Monday's scheduled game against Southeast Missouri until Feb. 19.
The Racers went down to the wire with three-time defending OVC champs UT Martin in their lone game last week, but couldn't overcome the Skyhawk trio of Heather Butler, Jasmine Newsome and Ashia Jones who combined for 77 of their team's 88 points to top Murray State, 88-87. Despite the loss, the Racers played one of their best games of the season, setting new season-highs in free throws made (29), total rebounds (62) and offensive rebounds (21).
The Racers outrebounded the Skyhawks by 25 (62-37) in the game, setting a new season-high in rebounding margin as well. Murray State was also lights-out at the free throw line making 29 of 34 attempts to finish the night at 85.3 percent.
Keiona Kirby led Murray State in the game with 27 points, including a near perfect 10-for-11 performance at the free throw line. Jessica Winfrey accounted for nearly a third of the Racers' total rebounds on the night by pulling down a career-high 20, to go along with seven points. The performance was the third consecutive game and ninth-time this season that Winfrey has pulled down double-digit rebounds.
Â
Taylor Porter added 11 to the cause, while Jashae Lee, Julia Fox and Janssen Starks each added 10. The five players in double-figures marked just the third time this season that MSU had at least five players with 10 or more points and the first in a losing effort.
Saturday will be the 88th meeting in the series with Austin Peay, with the Racers holding a slim three-game advantage at 45-42. The Racers came off of an eight-game schneid to the Lady Govs at the 2012 OVC Tournament and won both contests last season to give themselves a the three-game cushion. Murray State is 28-14 all-time against Austin Peay at home, but has won just two of the last five meetings at the CFSB Center.
Â
Austin Peay, like the Racers, will enter Saturday looking for its first OVC win of the season. The Lady Govs fell to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in league play Monday when they were bested by UT Martin, 95-81. Kristen Stainbeck poured in a career-high 34 points in the loss, while Jennifer Nwokocha used a career-high 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to post the second double-double of her career.
Â
Tiasha Gray & Stainbeck lead the Lady Govs in scoring so far this season with 14.1 and 12.2 points, respectively, while Beth Rates is tops on her team in the rebounding column at 5.7 boards per game.
As a team, the Lady Govs average 66.7 points per game, while giving up a league-high 78.9. Austin Peay is currently third in the OVC in rebounding production at 40.9 per game, 4.5 behind the Racers, who currently lead the league in that category.
