The Murray State Racers play a pair of games this week in the Prairie State when they take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers Thursday in Charleston, Ill. Tip time at Lantz Arena is set for 7 p.m. Â All MSU games are heard over the air on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The Racer TV Network airs the game on ESPN3 and the cable systems of Time Warner, Mediacom and Murray Electic. Â The OVC Digital Network has free streaming video at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
After battling through a tough non-conference schedule, the Racers have put together a 4-0 run at the start of the OVC season with three wins at home and one on the road. Last week, MSU beat Eastern Kentucky 77-64 in Richmond, Ky., then returned home for an 89-67 win over Austin Peay. The Racers had six players in double-figure scoring against the Govs led by Jeffery Moss' 20.
The Racers (9-7, 4-0) have the best rebound margin in league play so far at +9.5. Their board work combined with improved free throw shooting has boosted their prospects. That Racers are hitting 72 percent from the line and have made more free throws (96) than their opponents have attempted (65). Moss is third in OVC free throw shooting at 44-of-51 (.863).
For a second straight week, MSU's Jarvis Williams and Cameron Payne were named OVC Newcomer and Freshman of the Week. Both were outstanding last week in the MSU wins over EKU and APSU.
The Panthers (5-11, 2-3) scored a road win last weekend at Jacksonville State 56-48. EIU is 3-4 at Lantz Arena this season and 1-2 in OVC play.
In OVC games, Payne and Williams are third and eighth in scoring at 21.0 and 17.3 points per game. Payne, the frontrunner for OVC Freshman of the Year is second in the league with 5.8 assists per game, while Williams is first with 12.3 rebounds. EIU's Sherman Blanford is ninth in rebounding at 6.4 and 17th with 13.8 points per game.
Payne is half way through the season and has already posted 90 assists and is 47th at MSU for a single season. The MSU record of 212 was set in the 1996-97 season by Chad Townsend.
In the early going of the OVC season, the OVC East leads the West Division in head-to-head games 9-6. The Racers are 1-0 against the East with a win over EKU. The Racers return home next week for a pair of games against Tennessee State and Jacksonville State, two teams from the East Division.
The Racers are meeting the Panthers for the 21st time at Lantz Arena where they're 14-6, but lost there last season. Overall, MSU leads the all-time series with EIU 37-9 and have won 10 of the last 12.
