The Murray State Racers scored a 3-2 win over Austin Peay and Julie Mooney tied the school single-season scoring mark with her 13th goal as the Racers beat the Govs in Clarksville, Tenn., in Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer Friday night at Morgan Brothers Field.
Murray State improved to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the OVC. The Racers are holding to a solid second place with 18 points, behind the 21 points of first place SIUE who got a 2-1 win at Jacksonville State.
Mooney's goal in the 14th minute tied the game at 1-1 and marked her 13th score of the season as she pulled into a tie with the great Theresa Reedy who also scored 13 times in 2004. Mooney's goal tied the score after APSU scored in the fourth minute.
The goal was the first against Racer goal keeper Shelby Haworth since Oct. 5 at SEMO, a span of more than 285 minutes.
The Racers pulled in front in the 38th minute on a header by Taylor Richerson. Her third goal of the season was assisted by Destiny White. For the freshman White, it was her first collegiate assist.
After the game stayed a 2-1 through halftime, Pavlina Nepokojova scored her third goal of the season to push the Racers in front 3-1 in the 63rd minute.
The Racers couldn't cruise though, when the Govs scored in the 87th minute to cut the lead to 3-2.
Haworth got the win minding the Racer net for all 90 minutes. She made six saves in improving to 8-5.
The Racers had an 11-6 edge in shots on goal.
MSU improved to 10-4-1 against Austin Peay in their all-time series. MSU has won back-to-back road games for the first time this season after winning last Friday at Eastern Illinois.
The Racers return home Sunday for Senior Day and a match against the Belmont Bruins. Kick-off is a 1 p.m. at Cutchin Field as the Racers say goodbye to a great class that includes: (Julie Mooney (St. Peters, Mo.), Sonja Murphy (Wexford, Ireland), Bronagh Kerins (Sligo, Ireland), Pavlina Nepokojova (Prague, Czech Republic), Amber Hanson (Bourbonnais, Ill.), Rebecca Bjorkvall (Aland, Finland) and Halle Pinkham (Elizabethtown, Ky.)
