Racers 11th Win Earns No. 3 Seed In OVC Championship

The Murray State Racers finished the Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer regular season Friday with a 1-0 win on Halloween night in Martin, Tennessee.

The Racers improved to 11-8 and 7-3 in OVC play, which was enough to earn the No. 3 seed in next week's OVC Championship. MSU will play in Cape Girardeau, Mo., where they'll play a Thursday match against Morehead State in a 4 p.m. kick at Houck Stadium.

The Racers played a brilliant and scrappy defensive game at Skyhawk Field and in the spot light was freshman goal keeper Shelby Haworth who made a career-high 11 saves to complete her seventh shutout in 16 starts.

Murray State was outshot by UTM 22-16, but in the 59th minute they got the only one that mattered.

Pavlina Nepokojova, who was only an assist from matching the MSU single-season mark, scored her fourth goal of the season off a through pass from Harriet Withers. When the senior Nepokojova knocked the ball into the net in the upper left corner, the Racers had the lead and all they had to do was protect.

Through the expected frantic UTM push, the Racers held on for the1-0 win.

After starting the season for rookie head coach Jeremy Groves at 1-5, the Racers caught fire and finished the season winning 10-of-13.

Now the Racers prepare for a Thursday OVC Tournament game in what is their first appearance in the postseason since 2011.

With the win, the Racers now lead their all-time series with the Skyhawks 10-4-3. MSU is 4-3-0 all-time when they play at UTM. The Skyhawks had won the last two meetings, but MSU got its first win against UTM since 2010.

MSU finished the season 4-6 in road games, but won their final three.

With their 11th win, the Racers have matched the second-best win total in the 15 seasons of the program. MSU has matched the 11 wins that the teams from 2007 and 2009 had. If MSU can win their first round game in the OVC Tournament, they'll tie the 12 wins that the 2008 team had.

The Racers' game with Morehead State Thursday in Missouri is the second of the season between the two. Murray State won the first meeting at home (Oct. 10) 5-0.

The Racers will be making their 10th appearance in the OVC Soccer Tournament in their 15th season as a program and their first since 2011. MSU is 6-6-2 all-time (2-0-1 home, 0-1-0 road, 4-5-1 neutral). MSU's only OVC Tournament championship came at Morehead State in 2009 when they won three matches, all by shutout.

The 2014 Ohio Valley Conference soccer field is set. Southeast Missouri and SIUE each won a share of the regular-season title with the Redhawks earning the No. 1 seed and the right to host the three-day event. The Cougars will be the No. 2 seed followed by Murray State, UT Martin, Jacksonville State and Morehead State.
