The Murray State Racers hit the road for a Tuesday game at Middle Tennessee in what is the 137th meeting between the former Ohio Valley Conference rivals. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn., as the Racers visit MTSU for the first time since 2002. All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is back for his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth will provide analysis. GoBlueRaiders.com will have live and free streaming video.
The Racers opened the season Friday (Nov. 14) at home and played a thriller at the CFSB Center against the Houston Cougars. In the first meeting between the two since 1955, the Racers built an 11 point first half lead, but faded down the stretch in a 77-74 loss. Cameron Payne led the Racers with 21 points, while Jeffery Moss tossed in 18. Jarvis Williams notched a double-double (10 points & 11 rebounds) and Justin Seymour had 12 points off the MSU bench.
Middle Tennessee captured its seventh consecutive season–opening victory by defeating Ohio Valley Friday at the Murphy Center by a 77-60 score. Reggie Upshaw led MTSU with 17 points as the Blue Raiders overcame a first half in which they were 0-for-11 from 3-point range.
The series between the Racers and Blue Raiders brings back memories of the good ol' days when the two tangled in the Ohio Valley Conference. Last season's game in Murray was MTSU's first visit since a New Year's Day game in 2003. And MSU's visit this week to Murfreesboro is their first in 14 years.
The Racers are back at home Thursday for a 7 p.m. game with the Brescia Bearcats. Former Racer assistant Josh Gibson, a Murray native, returns for a third straight season. MSU is out on the road again (Nov. 24) when they travel to Cincinnati to face the Xavier Musketeers.
At OVC media day in Nashville (Oct. 21), Cameron Payne was named OVC Preseason Player of the Year. He was also named to the watch list for both the Bob Cousy Award and the Lou Henson Award. Seniors Jarvis Williams and T.J. Sapp were named to the All-OVC Preseason team. MSU was the top overall pick in the preseason and picked to win the OVC West Division. Belmont was the top pick in the OVC East Division.Â
The Racers lead the OVC with 23 regular season titles and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances. Head Coach Steve Prohm, the 2012 OVC Coach of the Year and Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, is 75-24 in his fourth season at Murray State.Â
Racer fans are invited to the Challenge In Music City in Nashville, Tenn., at Municipal Auditorium. The three-day event (Nov. 28-30), includes the Racers, Drake, Portland and Valparaiso. Each team gets three games in three days. Call the MSU ticket office at (270) 809-3000 or visit GoRacers.com for ticket information.
