The Racers are coming off a rough four-game swing that took them to Cincinnati to face Xavier, then to Nashville for the Challenge In Music City where MSU lost a pair of games to Portland and Valparaiso, before defeating Drake. In the final game of the weekend event, the Racers used a late-second half 10-0 run to get past Drake 68-59. Jarvis Williams scored his third double-double of the season and the 17th in his MSU career with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Seymour came off the bench and scored 14 points for MSU.
Through seven games, the Racers are seeking momentum in reviving a sleeping shooting game and in rebounding. MSU beat Drake on the boards Sunday 31-26. MSU has slumped somewhat on offense and enters the Bethel game shooting 42 percent from the field (173-406) and 28 percent from 3-point range (42-130). A year ago, the Racers were 2-5 before taking off on a winning streak. Through seven games last season, MSU was shooting 46 percent (177-379) and 35 percent from 3-point (39-111). Â
Cameron Payne leads the Racers in the scoring department with 16.3 points per game, while Williams is MSU's second double-digit scorer at 15.0.Â
The Racers have 70 steals in seven games to start the season which ranks them 12th in the nation. The national leader is West Virginia with 13.9 per game. MSU's 70 steals is seventh. Payne is 12th with three steals per game. MSU is 34th nationally in turnover margin where they're forcing 4.1 more turnovers per game than they give up.
After the game with Bethel, the Racers host Western Kentucky Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. game. The new America Sports Network will air the game. The Racers have next week for final exams. MSU goes on the road again for a game at Evansville (Dec. 13).
