In their final meet before the OVC indoor championships, Murray State's track and field team competed at the Grand Valley State Big Meet in Allendale, Mich. The two-day meet saw roughly 2,400 entries from 67 teams.
The Racers saw success on both days starting with the 5,000m run on Friday. Carolyne Tanui set an indoor PR, breaking 18 minutes for the first time. Tanui crossed the line in 17:58.17, the fourth fastest time in MSU history and fifth in the OVC this season. Leah Krause and Alicyn Hester also ran PR's in 18:40.19 and 18:54.65 respectively. Tanui came back Saturday to run a personal-best 5:11.40 in the mile, placing her ninth in MSU history.
After narrowly missing the record a few weeks ago, Tonia Pratt finally broke the school record in the indoor weight throw. Her toss of 18.92m (62'1") breaks the school record by 1.5 inches. Pratt now holds the school record in the indoor weight throw and shot put and the outdoor discus and hammer throw.
Reigning OVC Track Athlete of the Week LaShea Shaw bettered her own No. 2 all-time MSU mark in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing second in the event with an 8.49. Shaw and Hannah McAllister both ran in the 60m dash as well, with Shaw finishing in 7.85 and McAllister with a PR in 7.78. Both Racers also saw personal-bests in the 200m dash. Shaw climbed to No. 5 all-time at MSU with a 25.13 and McAllister broke 26 seconds for the first time, finishing in 25.63.
Emma Gilmore put on a strong performance both days, setting a personal-best in three events. The weekend started with Gilmore placing seventh in the 600m in 1:36.75, the fifth fastest time in MSU history. She came back Saturday and ran the current top-time in the OVC this season in the 800m, 2:12.99, also No. 5 all-time at MSU. She then set another PR in the mile, running 5:06.82, bettering her own fifth place record at MSU.
The 4x400m team of Brittany Bohn, Taylor Adcock, LaShea Shaw and Natalie Pattin set a season-best, running the relay in 3:54.87. They finished fourth in the open event and are currently No. 5 in the OVC.
In addition to her spot on the 4x4 team, freshman Taylor Adcock set season-bests in the 400m and 600m runs. Adcock ran the fastest MSU 400m time this season, 1:00.50. She also hit 1:38.78 in the 600m, the 10th fastest time in school history.
The Racers will have a week off before traveling to Nashville, Tenn. for the indoor OVC championships, hosted by Tennessee State, Feb. 27-Mar. 1.Â
