The Murray State Racers played in the game of the year thus far in the Ohio Valley Conference season in a wild 99-96 defeat against the Belmont Bruins at the Curb Events Center in Nashville, Tenn. In a rematch of last spring's OVC Tournament title game, the Racers nearly erased a 10-point deficit with a minute remaining. The game ended only after T.J. Sapp intercepted a pass at mid-court with 3.5 seconds left and advanced far enough up the court to get a clean look at a would-be tying 3-pointer. When Sapp's shot fell off the rim, MSU (13-9) fell to 8-2 in league play and still the leader in the OVC East Division, while the Bruins (18-8) moved to 9-2 and on top in the OVC East Division. The Racers won the rebound stat for the 11th time this season, but lost for the first time when doing it.
Racers' head coach Steve Prohm has taken a practically new team this season and molded them into championship contenders. The Racers have only one senior, seven underclassmen and only one returning starter, but are still on track to keep the program's amazing run of 26 straight winning seasons going. The Racers are 65-21 (.764) in the last three seasons under Prohm. MSU is 88-30 (.752) in the last four seasons and 119-35 (.777) in the last five. In the OVC, MSU is 33-9 (.804) under Coach Prohm. 47-13 (.796) and 64-14 (.831) in the last four and five seasons.
Murray State's Williams and Payne were named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week and Freshman of the Week. It marks the fourth time this season that the dynamic duo has won awards in the same week.
The Racers come back home next week to the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., for a pair of games against SIUE and Eastern Illinois. Thursday the Racers host SIUE in their second game of the season. The Cougars won the first meeting at home 67-60 (Jan. 18). The Racers came from behind in their win at Eastern Illinois (Jan. 16) by a 70-66 score.
Tennessee State (3-22) fell to 2-9 in OVC play Thursday with a home 75-65 loss to Austin Peay. TSU trailed by 23 in the first half but made a run at the Governors in the second half. M.J. Rhett led the Tigers with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double this season. Kennedy Eubanks also had a double-double for TSU with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
