The Murray State softball team will begin a new era this weekend when it opens the brand new, on-campus Racer Field to open OVC play against UT Martin

After four years of playing at the City of Murray's Central Park, the Murray State Racer softball team finally has a permanent home located in the heart of campus. The on-campus facility was completed in the spring of 2013 and will officially open on Saturday against the Skyhawks. While the field has not had its grand opening, the Racers did play a slate of fall games at Racer Field this past fall and won all six games.

Murray State will also begin its fifth OVC campaign this weekend and will enter at 55-35 all-time in league play, having never had a losing OVC record. In the four previous OVC seasons, the Racers have gone 2-2 in OVC openers, going 1-1 at home and 1-1 on the road. MSU won the 2010 and 2012 season openers, but fell in 2011 and 2013 against UT Martin and Southeast Missouri, respectively.
The Racers had a positive outing at last weekend's Aces Invitational hosted by Evansville where they went 3-1. MSU posted two wins over South Dakota State and split with IPFW over the four-game stretch. Murray State began the weekend by using a solo home run from Casey Castile to beat IPFW, 1-0, and followed that with an 11-0 shutout of SDSU. On Monday, Murray State came back from a 6-1 deficit to beat South Dakota State, 7-6, but fell to IPFW in the invite finale, 4-0.

Castile led MSU on the weekend with a .455 average (5-11) to go along with four RBIs, two runs, a double, a home run and a walk. In the circle, Mason Robinson led the way with a 1-0 record and 0.57 ERA. In three appearances that spanned 12.innings, she allowed just one earned run, walked only three batters, struck out 12 and limited opponents to a .182 clip.

Prior to this weekend, UT Martin and Murray State have met 17 previous times, with the Skyhawks leading the all-time series11-6. Last season, the Racers notched their first-ever wins at UT Martin by winning the series, 2-1. MSU also opened the 2013 OVC Tournament by topping the Skyhawks, 2-1, before falling to them in the semi-finals 2-1. Murray State is 2-2 all-time against UTM in Murray, last hosting the Skyhawks in 2012 when they also won that series, 2-1.

UT Martin is coming off of a mid-week split Tuesday against Saint Louis, winning game one, 7-2, before falling in the finale, 4-3. Catcher Deven Wilson led the Skyhawks by going 5-for-8 in the DH, with three RBIs, a home run and a run.

On the season, UT Martin is hitting .272 on the season and has tallied 30 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 86 RBIs. In the circle, the Skyhawk staff has posted a 3.05 ERA with 98 strikeouts and a .238 opponent's batting average.

Wilson currently leads UT Martin on the year with a .371 average, 14 RBIs, eight doubles and a home run. Lauren Smith is also swinging the bat well for the Skyhawks this season hitting a at a .273 clip to go along with 14 RBIs, two doubles, three home runs and seven runs. UTM's go-to pitcher so far this year has been Elizabeth Weigand who currently has a 2.69 ERA, a 6-2 record and 32 strikeouts.
