Murray State loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning, but failed to score a run in falling, 3-1, to SIU Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (9-11, 4-4 OVC) started the ninth inning with a pair of hit by pitches surrounding a Dalton West single. But from that point, SIUE closer P.J. Schuster shut the door as he got a strikeout and a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
The loss overshadowed another strong outing from Brock Downey (4-1) as the junior tossed his second-straight complete game. He allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and seven strikeouts. Â
SIUE (8-12, 6-2 OVC) got a strong start of its own from Evan Martens (2-2) as he gave up one run on seven hits and five strikeouts over seven innings. Â
The Cougars scratched across an unearned run in the third inning as Zach Little singled to start the inning. A stolen base and throwing error moved the runner to third. A fielding error off the bat of Austin Verschoore allowed the runner to score.
SIUE tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning as a fielder's choice and two hits loaded the bases. Yesterday's big bat, Chase Green, came through again with a two-run single to right center.
The Breds got one of the runs back in the home-half of the inning on a Matt McGowan RBI single to left field. The hit scored Matthew Johnson, who led off the inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch.
MSU had its chances to score throughout the game as they had a runner in scoring position with less that two outs in five of the nine innings, scoring only once. All in all, the Breds stranded seven runners.
McGowan, Bayus, West and Johnson each had two hits, combining for the eight total hits.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
