9/19/2014 6:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Julie Mooney scored the 10th hat trick in Murray State women's soccer history Friday to lead the Racers to a 3-1 victory over the IUPUI Jaguars at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
The Racers (3-5) have won back-to-back games and improved to 2-1 at home. The Jaguars (2-5-2) have lost back-to-back matches.
Mooney's nifty footwork was a result of a constant attacking offense that harried IUPUI from the opening kick.
The senior from St. Peters, Missouri and All-Ohio Valley Conference pick as a junior, got the Racers on the board first with a goal in the 37th minute. Taylor Stevens assisted and the Racers had a 1-0 lead which they carried into the half.
After IUPUI tied the game with a goal from Tori Minnich in the 55th minute, Mooney was at it again with her second goal. Stevens assisted again as MSU led 2-1 in the 61st minute.
The Racers put the game away with Mooney's third goal in the 83rd minute on an assist from Pavlina Nepokojova.
The Racers finished the day with a 17-5 advantage in shots and had seven shots on goal.
MSU goalkeeper Shelby Haworth improved to 2-3 and faced only five shots, giving one goal and making one save.
The hat trick gives Mooney six goals in eight games this season for the Racers and 22 in her career. She is tied for fourth place all-time with Krista Muilkens (2005-08) and one behind Jackie Thomas (2000-03). Theresa Reedy (2001-04) has the all-time lead with 34 and Rebekah Clay (2005-08) is in second with 24.
The Racers play their final non-conference match at home Sunday at noon against Northern Kentucky. Game time is noon at Cutchin Field.
