Racers Blitz TTU For Fourth Straight Win

The Murray State women's soccer team opened play in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 3-0 home win Friday over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.
The streaking Racers (5-5, 1-0 OVC) have won four straight games and are one off the program record of five in a row from 2005. The Racers get their chance to keep the winning alive on Sunday when they host the Jacksonville State at 1 p.m.
MSU and TTU (2-8, 0-1 OVC) slugged it out through a scoreless first half. Julie Mooney scored her eighth goal of the season off an assist from Kelsey Smith in the 52nd minute. In the 73rd minute, the Racers scored off the foot of Harriet Withers and an assist by Rebecca Bjorkvall. With MSU dominating on the defensive end, they tacked on a third goal in the 86th minute by Lyssie Wright off another assist from Bjorkvall. For Withers, it was her third goal of the season and for Wright her first. Bjorkvall has six assist this season after her pair today.
The Murray State defense limited the Golden Eagles to six shots and goalkeeper Shelby Haworth stopped all three shots on goal she faced to record her second shutout in seven starts.
The Racers host Jacksonville State Sunday in a 1 p.m. start at Cutchin Field. JSU opened OVC play at home with a 2-1 win over UT Martin in overtime. The Gamecocks are 5-5 playing their first overtime game of the season. The Racers lead the all-time series with JSU 7-3-1. Sunday's game will be carried on the OVC Digital Network with live and free streaming video on the internet.

MSU Soccer began in 2000 and is currently playing its 14th season. The program record five-game win streak was set in the 2005 season. MSU's current four-game run matches the last instance from 2008.

Julie Mooney continues to make a name in MSU's all-time statistics. She now has 24 goals and is tied for second with Rebekah Clay (2005-08) and 10 off the record of 34 by Theresa Reedy (2001-04). Mooney is already the all-time leader in points (85), shots (238) and shots on goal (121). Additionally, she is third in assists and is one off the program mark with seven game winning goals.
Shelby Haworth is making quite a splash as a freshman goalkeeper for the Racers. Today was her second shutout in seven starts and she lowered her goals-against-average to 1.13. She started the week sixth in the OVC in GAA and is bound to move up with today's performance.
The Racers are now 6-7-2 all-time in OVC openers. Today was only the third time MSU has opened league play at home and they got their first win to even the tally 1-1-1. MSU is 5-6-1 on the road.
