The Murray State Racers look to extend their 10-game winning streak Sunday when they travel to Jacksonville State to take on the Gamecocks in a Sunday evening clash at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game will be aired on television by the CBS Sports Network with John Sadak and Chris Walker calling the action. All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis.
The Racers knocked off Tennessee Tech Thursday 83-67 to hand the Golden Eagles their first home loss of the season. Cameron Payne scored 24 points to lead the Racers (12-4, 2-0 OVC) who only committed five turnovers in the game.
MSU now faces a JSU team that is the final team with an undefeated home mark in the OVC. The Gamecocks (8-9, 1-2 OVC) scored their first conference win Thursday 71-59 over the Austin Peay Governors.Â
MSU has been a very good road team in Coach Steve Prohm's four seasons and the final season of Coach Billy Kennedy. In the last five seasons since 2010-11, MSU has posted a 41-18 mark for a winning clip of 69 percent. This puts the Racers in the same neighborhood as Wichita State, Gonzaga, Kansas and Syracuse.
The Racers are also well on their way to a 28th straight winning season. The Racers came into the season trailing only Syracuse, Kansas and Arizona in this stat. MSU's remarkable run of winning seasons has been accomplished by seven different coaches.Â
The Racers 10-game run is the 19th winning streak of 10+ in program history and the first since MSU went 23-0 to start the season in Coach Steve Prohm's rookie season in 2011-12. Prohm joins Mark Gottfried, Steve Newton, Harlan Hodges and Carlisle Cutchin as the only MSU coaches with two or more 10-game runs. Cutchin, MSU's first coach, had four such streaks. Â
Junior Jeffery Moss has scored 68 points in the last four games and missed only 12 shots. His amazing good shooting reads: 17 points per game on 21-of-33 shots for 63 percent. He's also hot from the 3-point line going 10-of-17 for 58 percent.
Moss, Cameron Payne and Jarvis Williams are all closing on 1,000 career points. Payne has 863, Moss sits at 754, while Williams has 752.
The Racers return home in the coming week for a Thursday night game against Belmont on ESPNU.
