Racers Give Rookie McMahon 1st Win As Head Coach

The Murray State Racers scored a 50-point win in their home and season opener Friday with a 105-55 victory over the Harris-Stowe Hornets at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
Led by Damarcus Croaker and Gee McGhee with 21 and 20 points, the Racers made sure rookie head coach Matt McMahon was victorious in his first game guiding the Racer bus.
In a game that was never in doubt from the start, the Racers took a lead of 31-10 with 7:33 remaining in the half and led the Hornets by 30 at intermission. MSU kept the pressure on defensively through several different lineups and pushed the lead to 40 with 9:42 left.
The Racers held HSSU to 29 percent shooting on 15-of-52 shots, while making 57 percent on 38-of-66.
MSU forced the Hornets into 27 turnovers and produced 27 assists.
Wayne Langston added 16 points, while A.J. Patty and Justin Seymour scored 11 and 10 to give the Racers five in double-figure scoring.
Game two of the season is Tuesday when Murray State meets old Ohio Valley Conference rival Middle Tennessee at the CFSB Center at 7 p.m. The American Sports Network will air the game.

Tonight was the start of the 91st season of basketball for the Racers.
The Racers have won 18-of-19 home openers in the CFSB Center. The Racers' only loss came last season against Houston 77-74. In overall season openers, the Racers won for the first time since 2012 against Brescia.
The Racers' 50-point winning margin is the fourth largest in CFSB Center history, behind +65 (2004) vs Colorado Springs, +59 (2009) vs Tennessee Wesleyan and +52 (2005) vs Morehead State. It's the best winning margin in a home opener since 2012 against Brescia +45.
Racers' head coach Matt McMahon is the 12th of 16 MSU head coaches to win his first game. His win over Harris-Stowe was also the first win in 2011 for former Coach Steve Prohm.
Prohm saw his No. 7 Iowa State squad win its first game tonight. The Cyclones played in Sioux Falls, S.D. and defeated Colorado 68-62.
Senior Jeffery Moss is poised to become the 44th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. He scored six points tonight and now has 974 in his MSU career.
