The Murray State volleyball team survived and advanced to tomorrow night's OVC Tournament Championship Match with a 3-0 sweep over Tennessee State Friday night at Racer Arena.
After coming out with a blistering 25-16 victory in the first set, the Racers had to battle back from multiple set points to win a wild second set, 30-28. In the third and final set, the Racers closed with a strong kick for a 25-22 victory.
Scottie Ingram and Kristen Besselsen powered the Racer (27-2) offense in the win, recording 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Ingram hit .364 on the night while Besselsen hit .345. Olivia Chatman continued her strong tournament by adding seven kills on .545 hitting. As a team, MSU out-hit the Tigers (16-14) .252-.102. The Racers also had 70 digs to TSU's 48, a mark they would need all of as the Racers were out-blocked in the contest 12-5 and had just one service ace.
Sam Bedard had a huge match from her setter position, averaging over 17 assists per set as she tallied 52 on the night to go along with 11 digs. Ellie Lorenz led the team with 17 digs while Taylor Olden and Besselsen had 16 and 13, respectively. It was Besselsen's eighth double-double of the season.
The Racers have now won 21 straight at Racer Arena and look to make it 22 and advance to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament as they host Belmont at 7 p.m. Saturday at Racer Arena. MSU won the two school's previous meeting this season in straight sets back in October.
