The Murray State Racers return home after the Christmas break to face the Brescia Bearcats Wednesday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The Racers' final game of 2015 tips as the second part of a doubleheader at The Bank at 7 p.m. The MSU women's team plays the first part of the twin-bill at 5 p.m. against Lindenwood.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistnat coach Kenny Roth provides analysis and commentary. Streaming video of the game is offered free online at OVCDigitalNetwork.com
The game finds the Racers (5-7) looking to bust out of their first five-game losing skid since 1992. Playing a top-30 strength of schedule lineup this season, the Racers have battled some tough teams and as of Monday, they had the No. 31 toughest schedule in the nation according to BBState.com. With Brescia looming as the next game up, the Racers will enter Ohio Valley Conference play Saturdaywhen Morehead State comes to The Bank on Jan. 2. The 2 p.m. tip-off will be aired by the CBS Sports Network.
Murray State's Wayne Langston has quickly proved he is one of the top offensive threats in the OVC as he become a starter for the first time this season. Checking some advanced metrics from BBState.com and KenPom.com, Lefty Langston shows up highly rated in several categories. This includes his a No. 31 ranking nationally in Effective Field Goal Percentage. Langston's rankings are particularly impressive when you consider there are approximately 5,400 players in NCAA D-I. In traditional statistics like field goal percentage, it just shows plainly that Lefty is putting the ball in the basket as his No. 15 national ranking attests. His field goal percentage is also the best in the OVC.
One facet of the game that the Racers are trying to find an answer to is making 3-point shots and defending it. Entering the Brescia game, MSU is No. 291 in NCAA D-I (351 teams) in making 30 percent. Defensively, the Racers' opponents are making 35 percent of their 3-point shots.
MSU lost at Wright State (Dec. 22) 65-49 and did defend the 3-point shot well in holding the Raiders to 5-of-16 (.313). The Racers had trouble though in hitting 4-of-21 (.190).
