Both the Murray State men's and women's athletics teams were recognized in the final Capital One Cup standings which honors the nation's best Division I athletic programs. The Racer women's team finished 89th, while the men finished 101st out of 347 NCAA Division I athletic programs.
For finishing in the top 100, the Racer women's team earned special recognition for ending the 2014-15 academic year as one of the nation's top Division I women's programs. The women's teams at Murray State are coming off a banner year in which they secured five top three finishes in the OVC, including regular-season and tournament titles for both volleyball and women's tennis.
The Capital One Cup is awarded annually to each of the best men's and women's Division I college athletics programs in the country. Points toward the Capital One Cup are earned and tracked throughout the year based on final standings of NCAA Championships and final official coaches' polls.
One winning men's and one winning women's program will be crowned after the completion of the final NCAA spring championships. Capital One will award a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and the Capital One Cup trophy to the winning schools at the ESPY awards in July.
Murray State received three points for finishing eighth at the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championship, which was the divided between the men's and women's standings because of rifle's co-ed status. The only other OVC school to make an appearance in the final rankings this season was Jacksonville State, who came in at 61st on the men's side and 71st on the women's.
The Racers also finished third amongst all Commonwealth schools behind Kentucky, who finished 15th in the women's standings and 22nd in the men's, and Louisville, who was 49th in the women's and 61st in the men's.
