The Murray State Racers take to the road for the first time in Ohio Valley Conference play Thursday when they travel to Nashville for a game with the Belmont Bruins. The 8 p.m. tip from the Curb Event Center will air on ESPNU with Dr. Jerry Punch and Mo Cassara calling the action.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis and commentary. The game is also available on WatchESPN.
The Racers are coming off a split of games at home last week in a 71-65 loss to Tennessee Tech and a 69-54 win over Jacksonville State. MSU's senior post-presence, Wayne "Lefty" Langston, had a week of 37 points on 55 percent shooting while grabbing 18 rebounds. Langston enters the week ranked 12th in NCAA D-I by making 64 percent of his shots. He's second in the OVC behind only Belmont's Evan Bradds (2nd nationally) who makes 70 percent of his.
Coming into the Belmont game, the Racers have a run of eight-straight OVC road wins. Their last loss was at SEMO in the final regular-season game in 2014. MSU has won eight-straight OVC road openers since losing at Eastern Kentucky in 2007.
The Racers are pleased that All-OVC Preseason Team pick Jeffery Moss has been shooting the ball well of late. MSU's do-it-all senior recently had a streak of six straight games with an assist. In two games last week, he scored 37 points on 13-of-29 from the field and 9-of-20 from 3-point range. An excellent free throw shooter, Moss is perfect from the free throw line in three OVC games at 8-of-8. Moss has started 85-straight games at Murray State.
The Racers are up against one of the top offensive teams in the nation as Belmont is 22nd in the country hitting nearly 50 percent from the field. In addition to Bradds, Belmont has sharp-shooter Craig Bradshaw. The OVC Preseason MVP is 60th in the nation hitting 42 percent.
The Racers lead the all-time series with Belmont 6-4 and are 2-1 in the regular season since they began playing the Bruins as an OVC game. In a short time, the Racers and Bruins have given fans a lot of excitement with several games coming down to the last possession. Unfortunately for the Racers, they saw Belmont take an OVC Tournament title game in 2013 and last season's championship game with last second shots.
After the game at Belmont, the Racers head over to Tennessee State to take on the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center. MSU returns home next week for games against Eastern Illinois (Jan. 21) and SIUE (Jan. 23).
