The Murray State Racers return home to the friendly confines of the CFSB Center Thursday when they host the Eastern Illinois Panthers in a men's-only game that tips at 7 p.m. The game marks the 51st meeting between the two since the first in 1981.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis and commentary. The game is also available on free online video at OVCDigital.com.
The Racers lead the EIU series 41-9 and are 23-2 at home. EIU's wins at the CFSB Center came in 2002 and 2011. Since the last home loss to the Panthers, the Racers have won the last four.
The Racers lost a pair of road games in the Ohio Valley Conference last week after it looked like they could win both. In the 83-71 loss at Belmont, the Racers started the second half with a 15-6 run to get their biggest lead of the night at 53-45 with 15:51 remaining. However, they couldn't hold on. At Tennessee State, the Racers led 65-60 with five minutes left and lost on a last-second shot 73-71. Even at 2-3 in the early portion of the conference schedule, the Racers are playing more minutes at a higher level that they did a month ago.
The Racers are led in scoring by Wayne Langston who is 11th in the nation in field goal percentage and Bryce Jones who ranks 11th in free throw shooting and was 10-of-10 at TSU. Senior Jeffery Moss is close to becoming the 28th MSU player to reach 1,200 points. He's been a great floor presence for the Racers and is 72nd in the nation in minutes played this season. Justin Seymour is coming off the TSU game where he connected on a career-high four 3-point shots.
The Panthers might have the best team that Coach Jay Spoonhour has had in his four seasons in Charleston. Led by guard Cornell Johnston who is 33rd in the nation in assist-to-ratio, EIU also has OVC Preseason pick Trae Anderson who leads the team in scoring and rebounding.
The Racers received a lift this week when sophomore Kedrick Flomo returned to classes at Murray State following emergency heart surgery (Nov. 3). Flomo, who will not play this season, returned to MSU from his home in Winston-Salem, N.C. However the team also received bad news when it was learned Brion Sanchious is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
After the EIU game, the Racers host the SIUE Cougars Saturday in a 7 p.m. tip after the MSU women host SIUE at 5 p.m.
