The Murray State women's basketball team seeks its first 3-0 start to begin OVC play since the 2007-08 season when Jacksonville State comes to the CFSB Center Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest. The Racers are coming off a 56-50 victory over Tennessee Tech on Thursday.
Kyra Gulledge recorded a career-high 21 rebounds in the win. The 21 boards are tied for the sixth-most in a single game in program history. Gulledge also added eight points, two steals and a block in the win. Ke'Shunan James scored a team-high 19 points in the game. LeAsia Wright added 15.
With a win, head coach Rob Cross will become the first coach in MSU history to win 100 games in a career with the Racers. Last season, Cross became the all-time winningest coach in program history. Cross is 9-2 all-time against JSU, but the Gamecocks have won the last two meetings.
Jacksonville State enters Saturday's contest as the lowest scoring team in the OVC, averaging 56.5 points per game. However, the Gamecocks are first in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 56.9 points per game. JSU is the only team in the OVC allowing fewer than 60 points per game. The Gamecocks are led offensively by Briana Benson's 10.7 points per game. Gretchen Morrison is second on the team averaging 9.9 a contest and is one of only two Gamecocks that have started in all 15 games this season. Destiney James is the other and she leads JSU with 49 assists this season.
Jacksonville State also leads the OVC in defensive field goal percentage, allowing opponents to shoot just 37.7 percent from the field. JSU is led by Head Coach Rick Pietri who is in his third season with the Gamecocks.
Saturday's contest will be the last off three straight games played at "The Bank" for the Racers to begin conference play. The next three games will all be on the road for MSU as it faces Belmont (Jan. 14), Tennessee State (Jan. 16) and Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 20) to close-out play against single-game opponents.
